Maxwell Food Centre (home of Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice — the stall Anthony Bourdain filmed and Barack Obama visited; SGD 5–8; 100+ surrounding stalls; open daily 8am–10pm) is the most famous hawker centre in Singapore and the essential Chinatown food stop.
💡 Arrive at 10:30am or 2:30pm: Tian Tian’s queue is under 20 min at those times (40+ min at noon). Order the half-chicken plate (SGD 5); request extra chilli and ginger; the dark soy is added tableside.
The Chinatown shophouse streets (Pagoda, Trengganu, Smith, and Temple Streets; the preserved 1890s–1940s shophouses with 5-foot-way covered walkways; the most photogenic Singapore streetscape) and the Chinatown Heritage Centre (48 Pagoda Street; SGD 20; recreated 1920s immigrant cubicle housing; oral history recordings) are the essential non-temple stops.
💡 Walk the streets at 8am before market stalls set up (the facades are covered by 10am). The Heritage Centre is open until 8pm — the single-room cubicle recreation (6 people in 10 sq ft) is the most affecting exhibit in Singapore.
Sri Mariamman Temple (244 South Bridge Road; the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore; 1827; the 6-storey gopuram with 72 deity figures) and Thian Hock Keng Temple (158 Telok Ayer Street; free; the most important Hokkien temple in Singapore; 1842; the finest altar carvings of any Singapore temple) complete the Chinatown heritage trail.

Chinatown has the finest concentration of hawker food in Singapore. Beyond the celebrated Maxwell Food Centre, the Chinatown Complex Food Centre (335 Smith Street; 5th floor; the largest hawker centre in Singapore by stall number; 260 stalls; the Outram Park Fried Kway Teow (the most celebrated char kway teow in Singapore; SGD 4; queue 20 minutes); the Mak’s Noodle (the Hokkien braised pork noodle soup; SGD 5); the entire 5th floor operates on a “walk until something stops you” basis (any stall with a queue; that’s the one worth trying). Tong Heng Confectionery (285 South Bridge Road; the century-old Cantonese confectionery; the egg tart; the wife biscuit; the lotus seed mooncake; SGD 1.50–4 per piece; the finest traditional Cantonese pastry in Singapore) is the essential Chinatown non-hawker food stop. The Maxwell Food Centre opening hours are 8am–10pm (individual stalls vary; most active 11am–2pm).
Chinatown’s photogenic shophouse streets (Pagoda Street; Trengganu Street) are most accessible for photography before the red-lantern souvenir stalls set up at 10am.
Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice is the most celebrated single hawker dish in the world and the queue reflects this (noon: 40+ minutes; 10:30am: 10–15 minutes; 2:30pm: 10–20 minutes; weekday 10:30am: under 10 minutes).
The free guided tour of the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple (2pm daily; the temple staff guide; 45 minutes; free; South Bridge Road) is the finest free tour in Singapore. The 5th-floor museum and the 100kg gold stupa are the highlights.
