Changi Airport (the world’s best airport since 1987; Terminals 1–4 with free butterfly gardens, rooftop pools, and museum zones) and Jewel Changi — the glass-dome complex housing the 40m HSBC Rain Vortex (the world’s tallest indoor waterfall; free without a boarding pass) — constitute a genuine tourist destination.

East Coast Park (the 15km beachside linear park; bicycle hire SGD 5–8/h; flat coastal path through casuarina palms; Sunday BBQ pits at SGD 10–17; East Coast Seafood Centre for chilli crab at SGD 60–80 per whole crab; Long Beach Seafood is the most celebrated restaurant) is Singapore’s favourite weekend escape.
Grab to the park (SGD 8–12; 20 min from city). Hire a bicycle by 9am for the coolest cycling. Book chilli crab at Long Beach Seafood at least 2 days ahead for weekends (6pm; order mantou buns to mop the sauce).

Katong and Joo Chiat (MRT Paya Lebar; the most intact Peranakan heritage neighbourhood in Singapore; East Coast Road’s pastel shophouses and ornate 5-foot-way tiles; Kim Choo Kueh Chang (109 East Coast Road; pineapple tarts SGD 12/box; from 9am) and 328 Katong Laksa (216 East Coast Road; the most celebrated laksa in Singapore; SGD 6; spoon-only serving style)) are the essential Peranakan stops.
Morning circuit: Kim Choo at 9am (tarts freshest from the oven), 328 Katong Laksa for breakfast (SGD 6; noodles cut short, spoon only). The East Coast Road shophouse walk (1h; free) is the finest Peranakan streetscape in Singapore.

The East Coast and Changi area has two essential food experiences: the 328 Katong Laksa (216 East Coast Road; SGD 6; the most celebrated laksa in Singapore; the coconut curry broth with cockles and prawn; the noodles cut short and eaten with a spoon) and the East Coast Park seafood restaurants (Long Beach Seafood and No Signboard Seafood; the chilli crab — Singapore’s national dish; the whole Sri Lanka crab in the tomato-egg sauce; SGD 60–80 per crab; serves 2; with mantou buns; the finest outdoor chilli crab setting in Singapore with the beach behind the restaurant). Jewel Changi Airport (the 5 floors of food; the most concentrated restaurant collection in East Singapore outside the Changi Business Park; the ramen at Menya Kokoro, the Penang laksa at Penang Culture, and the Shake Shack are the three busiest Jewel Changi food anchors) is the best rainy-day East Coast dining alternative.
Jewel Changi Airport is accessible by MRT from the city centre (Changi Airport MRT; EW29; 40 minutes; SGD 2.10; no boarding pass required; no security screening for Jewel and landside areas).
East Coast Park at 8am (the sea breeze off the South China Sea; the 15km coastal cycling path flat and largely car-free; bicycle hire SGD 8–15/hour from the bike rental stalls near East Coast Lagoon) is the finest cycling in Singapore.
