Gothic grandeur in Slovakia's east
Europe’s easternmost Gothic cathedral is a masterpiece out of scale with everything around it — a five-nave giant with a riot of pinnacles, a gilded winged altarpiece of St Elisabeth, and a rare double-spiral staircase whose two flights interweave without meeting. In the crypt lies Ferenc Rákóczi II, hero of the Hungarian uprisings, reburied here in 1906.

Košice’s centre is a single magnificent street that swells into a square around the cathedral — a parade of pastel burgher palaces, the neo-baroque State Theatre, the plague column and the musical fountain that plays beside the theatre on summer evenings. Café terraces run its full length; the evening korzo stroll is a ritual the city has never given up.

Beneath the Main Street lies the Lower Gate archaeological complex — excavated walls, gates and cellars of the medieval city you walk through under the pavement. Above ground, the Executioner’s Bastion and Mikluš Prison preserve the town’s grimmer trades, cells, instruments and all, in two crooked Gothic houses.
💡 The underground entrance hides by the plague column — easy to miss, atmospheric to explore, and blissfully cool in summer.
An hour west rises Spiš Castle, one of the largest castle complexes in Europe — four hectares of ramparts crowning a travertine hill, UNESCO-listed and visible for miles. Pair it with walled Levoča, whose church of St James holds the world’s tallest Gothic wooden altar, carved by Master Paul in the 1510s.
💡 Trains and buses toward Poprad stop at Spišské Podhradie; go early and you’ll have the ramparts nearly alone before the day warms.
Eastern Slovakia eats heartily and charges gently. Start with kapustnica or a bowl of sour žinčica-style soups, move to bryndzové halušky or pirohy stuffed with sheep’s cheese, and finish with the city’s own Košický medovník — honey cake by the slab. The Main Street’s grand cafes serve Habsburg-era cakes under chandeliers; the courtyards hide craft-beer taprooms and a surprising modern-bistro scene grown since the Capital of Culture year. Tokaj is closer than you think: the Slovak half of the famous wine region starts 40 minutes south, and its honeyed whites fill local lists at village prices.
Coffee on Hlavná as the street wakes, then St Elisabeth’s — altarpiece, Rákóczi crypt and the 160-step tower climb for the rooftop panorama of the lens-shaped square.
Descend into the Lower Gate underground, then tour the Executioner’s Bastion’s crooked houses. Lunch on pirohy in a courtyard tavern off the main drag.
Walk Hlavná end to end — palaces, plague column, East Slovak Museum’s golden treasure — with a honey-cake stop in a grand cafe under the chandeliers.
Join the korzo as the lamps come on, catch the singing fountain’s evening show by the theatre, and settle into dinner with a glass of Slovak Tokaj — the east’s sweetest secret.
Košice is five scenic hours from Bratislava by rail through the mountains — or a one-hour budget flight; the night train saves a hotel night.
Prices run 20–30% below Bratislava — this is the cheapest grand architecture in Central Europe; even the opera is pocket change.
Spis Castle, Levoca and the Tokaj cellars all work as easy day trips — pick one castle day and one wine day if you have them.
The State Theatre’s opera and ballet tickets cost less than a cinema in the west — dress smart-casual and book a box for the full effect.
Eastern Slovakia is properly cold December to February — pack for snow, and reward yourself with mulled wine on the Christmas market.
Everything in the centre is 10 minutes on foot from the cathedral — you’ll only need transport for the station and day trips.
