San Sebastián — Donostia in Basque — has more Michelin stars per capita than any city on earth except Kyoto. Three restaurants with three stars each (Arzak, Martín Berasategui, Mugaritz) sit within 20 kilometres of each other. The pintxos bar culture in the Parte Vieja (old town) is so well developed that a weekend evening involves moving from bar to bar eating one or two bites at each counter, the whole thing costing €25–35 per person for a full evening of exceptional food and drink. The city is also on a perfect horseshoe bay — La Concha, consistently named one of the best urban beaches in Europe — backed by wooded hills with a 19th-century funicular running to the top of one of them.

None of this is accidental. The Basque Country has a food culture of unusual depth and seriousness — the txokos (private members’ dining clubs, men only by tradition, now mixed) have been cooking elaborate multi-course meals for guests since the 19th century. The pintxos bar system emerged from the same culture of serious cooking applied to small formats. Eating in San Sebastián is not incidental to the visit; it is the visit. Budget accordingly and eat at every opportunity.

Top Sights in San Sebastián

San Sebastian La Concha beach bay Basque Country

La Concha Beach & the Bay

The horseshoe bay is one of the great pieces of urban geography in Europe: a perfectly curved beach enclosed by two hills, a small island (Santa Clara) in the middle, and the old town at one end. The beach itself is sandy and clean; the water reaches 22°C in August. Walk the full promenade from the old town to Ondarreta beach at the west end: 3km, takes 45 minutes, the view changes continuously.

💡 La Concha is the finest urban beach in Europe: sheltered, curved, swimmable June–October. The small ferry to Santa Clara island (€5 return) gives the finest panoramic view of the bay. Mornings before 10am belong to local swimmers; afternoons fill with summer visitors.

San Sebastian pintxos bar old town Basque food counter

Pintxos Bars of the Parte Vieja

The old town has 45 bars within a few streets. Each one has a counter covered in small plates of food on bread rounds — pintxos. The system: point at what you want, eat it at the bar, pay when you leave. The most serious pintxos bars also have hot dishes prepared to order. The correct evening involves 6–8 bars over 3–4 hours. The best include La Cuchara de San Telmo, Bar Zeruko and Ganbara.

💡 The pintxos circuit is best done from 7pm: one pintxos per bar, 4–5 bars, a small glass of txakoli (local sparkling white; poured from height) at each. Bar Nestor (tomato salad; €3/slice; limited portions after 12pm and 8pm) is the most legendary.

San Sebastian Parte Vieja old town night street lights

The Parte Vieja: Evening Culture

The Parte Vieja fills from 7pm as the serious pintxos round begins. The streets around Calle 31 de Agosto and Calle Fermín Calbetón are the centre of gravity. After the pintxos round (9–10pm), the old town transitions into a bar district that runs until 2–3am. The mix of ages is unusual: serious food tourists at 7pm, students at midnight, and locals who have been doing this for 40 years throughout.

💡 The Parte Vieja in early evening is the finest 2 hours in San Sebastián: the light off the Cantabrian Sea, the church of San Vicente Mártir, the pintxos bars beginning to fill. The La Tamborrada drumming festival (20 January) is the most extraordinary local celebration in the Basque Country.

Monte Igueldo San Sebastian panorama hill view

Monte Igueldo & the Views

The hill at the west end of the bay has a small amusement park at the summit (since 1912, includes a funicular, €4 return) and a panoramic view of the entire bay — the best view in the city. Walk up through the residential neighbourhood (40 min) or take the funicular. Sunset from here is the classic photograph. Monte Urgüll (the hill above the old town) has a 12th-century castle and a free walking trail with city views.

💡 The Monte Igueldo funicular (€4.10 return) gives the finest panoramic view of La Concha Bay. The 1928 roller coaster at the summit still operates. The walk down (45 min; steep) gives a second set of views from different angles.

Eating & Drinking in San Sebastián

The pintxos strategy is learnable. Go at 7pm when the bars have just put out the fresh pintxos — the display changes through the evening and gets picked over. Start at La Cuchara de San Telmo (hot pintxos, a small chalkboard menu, always a queue). Move to Bar Zeruko (creative, technically ambitious pintxos). Ganbara has the finest txampis (wild mushrooms in season, October–November). Bar Borda Berri and Bergara round out a complete evening. Eat two or three items per bar; drink txakoli (the local slightly sparkling white wine) or Rioja; pay when you leave; move on. Repeat six times.

The three-Michelin-star restaurants require advance planning. Arzak (Juan Mari Arzak’s family restaurant, in the same building since 1897) needs 3–6 months’ notice for a weekend booking. Mugaritz (40 min outside the city) needs similar notice and is categorically different — a 20-course avant-garde sequence, not a conventional dinner. Martín Berasategui (40 min drive) is the most conventionally excellent and needs 2–3 months. All three are genuinely transformative meals if food is your reason for travelling.

Getting Around San Sebastián

San Sebastián is a small city entirely walkable in 30 minutes from end to end. The Parte Vieja, La Concha promenade, Gros neighbourhood and the Kursaal Congress Centre are all within 20 minutes on foot. Dbus (the city bus network) runs to Monte Igueldo funicular (€2). Taxis are plentiful and inexpensive for the 20-minute drive to Arzak or the 40-minute drive to Martín Berasategui. The city has a well-developed coastal cycling path.

Best Time to Visit San Sebastián

June to September is beach season: La Concha is warm and the city is at peak animation. October is the best month for food: mushroom season, smaller crowds, still mild. July’s jazz festival (Jazzaldia) fills the city for a week. December to February is quiet, cheap and ideal for restaurant bookings.

What Does San Sebastián Cost?

Three Days in San Sebastián

San Sebastián is small; three days is enough to eat well, see the city and make one day trip. Come for four if you’re doing a Michelin dinner plus Bilbao.

Day 1San Sebastián
Arrive & First Pintxos Round

La Concha promenade walk on arrival. Monte Urgüll for the view (free, 20 min climb). Parte Vieja pintxos from 7pm: La Cuchara, Bar Zeruko, Ganbara — three bars, six bites, three glasses of txakoli. Bed by midnight.

💡 Walk La Concha promenade from the Zurriola end to the old town (20 min) before the first pintxos round. First circuit from 7pm: Bar Txepetxa (anchovies; unmissable), Bar Sport, A Fuego Negro. Finish at Bodega Donostiarra for a glass of Rioja.

Day 2San Sebastián
Beach, Monte Igueldo & Second Pintxos Round

La Concha beach in the morning (swim if June–September). Monte Igueldo funicular after lunch (€4 return, 20 min trip). A second pintxos round in the evening exploring different bars: Borda Berri, Bar Bergara, Bar Txepetxa (the anchovies bar — 20 different anchovy preparations).

💡 Morning swim at La Concha (7–9am). Funicular to Monte Igueldo after breakfast (2h; views + the 1928 rollercoaster). Afternoon: the Zurriola beach (surfers; completely different character from La Concha) or the Aquarium (€14; the underwater tunnel).

Day 3Bilbao
Bilbao Day Trip or Michelin Dinner

Bus to Bilbao (1h, €8 return): Guggenheim Museum (€16), Casco Viejo pintxos for lunch, Mercado de la Ribera, return by 6pm. Or: afternoon at leisure, evening at a Michelin-starred restaurant (if booked 3–6 months ahead). Either day is valid; the choice depends on when you planned.

💡 Bilbao by bus (1h; Alsa; €10 return) — the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (€17; book at guggenheim-bilbao.eus) is the most important building of the last 30 years. The Casco Viejo for pintxos on the return. OR: stay for a Michelin-starred dinner — San Sebastián has the most Michelin stars per capita in the world.

Practical Tips for San Sebastián

🍕

Pintxos strategy: 7pm, start at La Cuchara

Bar La Cuchara de San Telmo puts out fresh hot pintxos from 7pm. Arrive at opening or queue outside. Two or three bites plus a drink.

Michelin restaurants: book 3–6 months ahead

Arzak (3 stars), Mugaritz (2 stars, but ranked top 10 worldwide) and Martín Berasategui (3 stars) all require advance booking that most tourists underestimate.

🌈

Go in October for mushrooms and quieter crowds

October in the Basque Country is wild mushroom season — perretxikos (St George’s mushrooms) and txampis appear on every pintxos bar counter.

🌏

Bilbao: 1 hour by bus, the Guggenheim is worth it

The EuskoTren Alsa bus from San Sebastián to Bilbao takes about an hour and costs €8.

🍺

Txakoli: order it as your aperitif wine

Txakoli (pronounced cha-ko-LEE) is a slightly sparkling, acidic white wine from the Basque coast. It’s poured from a height to aerate it and served very cold.

🚶

Monte Urgüll: free walk, castle, best views

The hill above the Parte Vieja has a free walking path to a 12th-century castle at the top. The walk takes 20 minutes.
