Bandarban is the most dramatic corner of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, a region of mist-wrapped peaks, deep river valleys and diverse hill tribes in Bangladesh’s far southeast. It holds some of the country’s highest mountains and its most distinctive cultures.

The landscape and the Buddhist and animist hill communities feel a world away from the Bengali lowlands, making it the country’s premier destination for trekking and cultural travel.

Top Sights in Bandarban

Nilgiri Hills

Nilgiri Hills

One of the highest and most beautiful viewpoints in Bangladesh, where a hilltop resort floats above a sea of cloud that fills the valleys at dawn. On clear mornings the ridgelines roll away toward Myanmar.

💡 Stay overnight or arrive at sunrise to catch the clouds before they lift.

Nilachal Viewpoint

Nilachal Viewpoint

A hilltop park just above Bandarban town with sweeping views over the hills and river, popular for sunset and easily reached by local transport. The evening light over the valley is superb.

💡 Go late afternoon for sunset; it gets busy with domestic visitors on weekends.

Golden Temple

Golden Temple

The Buddha Dhatu Jadi, or Golden Temple, is the largest Theravada Buddhist temple in Bangladesh, its gilded spires rising above a hilltop near town and reflecting the region’s strong Buddhist heritage.

💡 Dress modestly and remove shoes; the hilltop setting is worth the climb.

Chimbuk & Tribal Villages

Chimbuk & Tribal Villages

The road to Chimbuk peak winds through the homelands of the Mro, Bawm and Marma peoples, with villages, markets and terraced fields offering a window into hill-tribe life very different from lowland Bangladesh.

💡 Some areas of the Hill Tracts require permits; travel with a local guide.

Sangu River & Falls

Sangu River & Falls

The Sangu river carves through the hills below Bandarban, and boat trips lead to remote waterfalls and rapids such as Nafakhum, deep in tribal country and reached by a mix of boat and trek.

💡 River trips to the far falls need a guide, permits and a full day or more.

Eating & Drinking

Hill food here differs from the plains: bamboo-cooked meats, jhum-grown vegetables, sticky rice and Marma and Chakma specialities appear alongside standard Bangladeshi curries. Simple local eateries in town are the place to try them.
