The Strip (Las Vegas Boulevard South, 6.8km, best walked at night) is the greatest concentration of themed hotel entertainment architecture in the world. Walking south from the Stratosphere to Mandalay Bay takes 1.5 hours and passes Resorts World, the Wynn, the Venetian (with the replica of St Mark’s Square and working gondola rides), Caesars Palace, the Bellagio, the Cosmopolitan, the MGM Grand and Excalibur. Each hotel contains free attractions: the Conservatory & Botanical Gardens at the Bellagio (changed seasonally), the Aquarium at the Mirage (closed but being rebuilt as Hard Rock), the volcano at the Mirage (free, 8pm and 9pm), the Forum Shops at Caesars (free Roman fountain shows). The Strip is free to walk 24 hours.
💡 Walk the full Strip (Stratosphere to Mandalay Bay; 4.5 miles; 90 min fast). All casino lobbies are free to enter: Bellagio conservatory, The Venetian canals, Caesars Forum Shops. The Strip is far better on foot than by taxi.
The Bellagio Fountains (free, choreographed water shows set to music, running every 30 min afternoons and every 15 min evenings, 8pm–midnight) are the most reliably spectacular free show in Las Vegas and the most photographed single attraction in Nevada. The best viewing positions: the Bellagio walkway over Las Vegas Boulevard (elevated view looking south), the terrace of the Cosmopolitan hotel across the street (free to access via the casino), or the Paris Las Vegas Eiffel Tower observation deck (´$25) for the aerial view. The shows last 3–5 minutes; arrive 5 minutes early for the walkway position.
💡 The Bellagio fountains run every 30 min in the afternoon and every 15 min after 8pm (free; best from Las Vegas Blvd or the Bellagio bridge). The Bellagio Conservatory inside (free; changes 5 times a year) is the finest free indoor attraction on the Strip.
The Fremont Street Experience (the original Las Vegas casino district, 6km north of the Strip) is a 5-block pedestrian mall covered by the Viva Vision canopy — a 1,400-foot LED screen displaying light shows every hour from dusk to midnight (free). The casinos on Fremont Street (the Golden Nugget, Binion’s, the Four Queens) are older, smaller, cheaper and less tourist-facing than the Strip: lower table minimums, cheaper drinks ($1–3 at the casino bar vs $12–18 on the Strip) and a different demographic of visitor. The SlotZilla zipline across the Fremont Street mall is $30–45 and genuinely fun.
💡 Fremont Street (free; nightly from dusk; LED canopy over 5 blocks; 1,500 free concerts per year) is the original Las Vegas. The Golden Nugget Hand of Faith gold nugget (27.2kg; the world’s largest; free in the lobby) is downtown’s finest free sight.
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area (30 min west of the Strip by car or rideshare; $15/car or free with America the Beautiful pass) is a 226,000-acre landscape of red Aztec Sandstone formations rising 900 metres above the valley floor. The 13-mile scenic drive (one-way loop, opens at sunrise) passes the Calico Hills (the most photogenic formation), the Pine Creek Canyon trailhead (3.5km, moderate) and the Ice Box Canyon trail (a shaded slot canyon). In summer, arrive at sunrise (6am) before the heat becomes dangerous. Valley of Fire (1h further, Nevada State Park) has even more extraordinary geology: bright red Precambrian sandstone from 150 million years ago.
💡 Red Rock Canyon NCA ($15/car; 30 min from the Strip; Route 159) has a 13-mile scenic drive and the Calico Hills Trail (2.2 miles; best accessible hike). Valley of Fire State Park (40 min north; $10/car) is more dramatic for photography than Red Rock.
Las Vegas has the highest concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants per square mile in the USA and a dining scene that has been developed by the celebrity chef residency model since the late 1990s. The relevant addresses: Joël Robuchon at the MGM Grand (the late chef’s flagship, now posthumously maintained, the most expensive restaurant in Las Vegas at $445 per person for the 16-course tasting menu); le BOUCHON by Daniel Boulud at The Venetian (the most approachable Michelin option, $60–120); Carbone at the Aria (Italian-American, perpetually booked, $100–160). The affordable end: the In-N-Out Burger on the Strip (the correct Fast food benchmark for the American West, $8–12); the Best Friend at Park MGM (Roy Choi’s Korean-American restaurant); the $8 pizza at Secret Pizza (unmarked third floor of the Cosmopolitan — find the sign by the elevator, always a queue, always worth it).
Casino drinks: the standard Las Vegas deal is free drinks while you are actively gambling (tip $1–2 per drink). This applies to any casino at any table or slot machine. The quality of the free drinks varies significantly; the Wynn and Bellagio are more generous than the budget casinos. The Chandelier Bar inside the Cosmopolitan (a three-story bar inside a chandelier of 2 million crystal beads) is the most spectacular bar setting in Las Vegas, with serious cocktails at $18–25.
The Strip is best experienced on foot — 6.8km end-to-end, 1.5 hours of walking with stops. Free trams connect Mandalay Bay to the Luxor and Excalibur (south end), Bellagio to CityCenter to Park MGM (central), and the Venetian to the Palazzo (always). The Las Vegas Monorail ($5/ride) serves the east side of the Strip but misses most of the main hotels; it is faster than walking between the MGM Grand and Westgate but not generally useful for sightseeing. Rideshare (Uber, Lyft) from the designated pickup points outside each hotel (not the front door — these are taxi-only) is $12–20 to Fremont Street. Never use the metered taxis from the hotel front; Uber is always cheaper and faster.
Mar–May and Sep–Nov are the optimal seasons: warm temperatures (22–32°C), clear skies and manageable crowds between the major conference calendar. Jun–Aug is extreme heat (40–45°C) but pools run at full capacity and accommodation is cheaper on summer weekdays. Jan–Feb is cold (8–15°C) but the cheapest season outside major events.
Las Vegas appears cheap (discounted rooms, free drinks while gambling) but the resort fees, show tickets and restaurant prices add up. Budget carefully. Per person per day, including gambling entertainment budget.
The Bellagio Fountains, the volcano at the Mirage, the Fremont Street light show and the MSG Sphere exterior display are all free. Walking the Strip costs nothing.
The resort fee is mandatory at every Strip hotel. Factor it in as a fixed cost of $35–55 per night on top of the room rate before comparing prices.
The Grand Canyon by helicopter from Las Vegas is the most dramatic day experience available from any American city.
Three days covers the Strip thoroughly, Fremont Street, Red Rock Canyon and a show or concert.
Walk the Strip from the Venetian (gondola canal, Doge’s Palace replica, the Shops at the Grand Canal) south through Caesars Palace (Forum Shops Roman fountain show) to the Bellagio (Conservatory, then the fountains at 8pm from the walkway). The Cosmopolitan for Secret Pizza ($8 a slice, third floor) and the Chandelier Bar ($20 cocktails in a million-crystal-bead chandelier). The MSG Sphere lit display is visible from the Strip after dark.
💡 The Deuce bus ($8/2h unlimited; 24h) covers the full Strip. Every casino lobby is free, air-conditioned and architecturally distinct. The Venetian canals, Bellagio conservatory, and Forum Shops at Caesars are the three best free interiors.
Rideshare to Red Rock Canyon at sunrise (30 min, $35). Drive the scenic loop and hike the Calico Hills trail (1.6km). Return to the Strip by noon. Rest during midday heat. Fremont Street in the evening: arrive at 8pm for the Viva Vision light show (every hour), walk the old casinos (Binion’s, the Golden Nugget), the SlotZilla zipline. The free drinks at Fremont casinos are more generous than the Strip; $20 in video poker can entertain for 2 hours with drinks.
💡 Red Rock Canyon at 8am (arrive before the desert heat builds; bring 2L water in summer). Fremont Street Experience at night: LED canopy shows (hourly from dusk), live music on 4 stages, the old-money casinos far cheaper than the Strip.
Morning: Valley of Fire State Park (1h from Las Vegas, $15 entry) for the extraordinary red Precambrian sandstone. Return for a late afternoon pool session (resort pool, included with hotel stay). Pre-dinner at the Wynn buffet or a steakhouse. Evening show (Cirque du Soleil O at Bellagio, $115–185; a comedy show at the Laugh Factory; or a residency concert at the Cosmopolitan or Park MGM).
💡 Valley of Fire State Park (40 min north; $10/car) for the 40,000-year-old petroglyphs and the most dramatic desert landscape within 1 hour of the Strip. Cirque du Soleil evening (mystere.com; Ka; O; from $70).
The house edge on all casino games is positive for the house.
The MSG Sphere (opened 2023, Paradise Road, east of the Strip) is a 17,500-capacity spherical arena with the world’s largest and highest-resolution LED screen on both its interior (160m wide) and exterior (exterior displays run nightly from dusk, visible across the valley, free).
Secret Pizza (Cosmopolitan Hotel; 3rd floor; take the elevator and follow the signs past the casino; open noon–1am; no reservations; USD 5–7 per slice; intentionally hard to find) is the most value-for-money pizza in Las Vegas.
Las Vegas in summer (Jun–Aug) reaches 41–45°C by midday. Walking the Strip at noon is genuinely dangerous.
Every hotel on the Strip charges a mandatory resort fee of $30–55 per night in addition to the room rate (which covers WiFi, pool access, gym and other amenities whether or not you use them).
Red Rock Canyon (30 min west by rideshare, $35–40 round trip; or drive; $15 per car entry, free with America the Beautiful pass) is the single best use of a Las Vegas morning.
