The historic centre of Maastricht (the west bank of the Meuse, from the Vrijthof in the north to the Sint Pietersberg in the south) is entirely walkable in 30 minutes. The Sint Servaasbrug connects the west bank to the Wyck neighbourhood (10 min on foot from the Vrijthof). Uber is available (€5–12 for most city journeys). The train from Amsterdam Centraal (2h30; the Intercity Direct; €25–40) and from Brussels (1h30 via Liège; €20–35) are the main intercity connections. The caves require the guided tour; the North Caves and Zonneberg Caves both have separate guided-tour programmes and separate starting points.
May–Sep is the finest season (18–24°C; Vrijthof terraces at peak; white asparagus in May). Carnival (3 days before Ash Wednesday; Feb–Mar; book months ahead) is the most distinctive annual event. TEFAF art fair (March) brings the finest week of the year for art lovers.
Maastricht is 15–20% cheaper than Amsterdam for accommodation but the restaurant culture is serious and priced accordingly — exceptional value compared to Paris or Brussels for equivalent quality. Per person per day.

Maastricht Carnival (3 days before Ash Wednesday) is the Netherlands’ finest — streets fill with costumed revellers from Friday night to Tuesday morning. All accommodation fills 6+ months ahead.
TEFAF (March; MECC Maastricht; from €50/day) brings 280+ galleries with Old Masters, antiquities, and design across 10 days. The opening preview is the finest single day of art dealing in the world.
Vlaai (fruit-filled open tart; €2–3 at any bakery) is the definitive Maastricht baked good. White asparagus (April–June; served with ham and hollandaise) is the Limburg seasonal speciality.
The North Caves of Sint-Pietersberg (guided tour only; €8; book via VVV Maastricht; 60 min; always 10°C) are carved chalk tunnels under the hill.
The Bonnefanten Museum (Avenue Céramique 250; €15; Tue–Sun) has the finest collection of 12th–15th century Mosan enamelwork and medieval Limburg sculpture in the world.
Liège, Belgium (30 min by train; from €8) and Aachen, Germany (45 min; from €10) are both easily reachable. Maastricht is the only Dutch city positioned for genuine 3-country day trips.
