San Miguel de Allende’s historic centre is the most walkable in Mexico: the Jardin Principal and the Parroquia are at the centre, all galleries, restaurants and hotels are within 15 minutes walk, and the cobblestone streets (though hard on suitcase wheels) are navigable on foot. Uber operates in San Miguel and is the most practical option for the hot spring day trips (La Gruta: 8km; MXN 80–120 each way), the Atotonilco Sanctuary (14km; MXN 150–200), and the Guanajuato day trip (the bus from the first-class bus terminal is more practical than Uber for the 45km journey). The Primera Plus and ETN bus lines from the San Miguel bus terminal serve Mexico City TAPO (3.5h; MXN 300–450) and Guanajuato (1h; MXN 80–120).
Oct–May is the dry season and balloon season (18–26°C; perfect). Semana Santa (Easter) is the most spectacular event but requires 6-month advance hotel booking. Jun–Sep brings afternoon rains. December and January are the most festive and the most beautiful in the warm winter light.
San Miguel is the most expensive city in the Mexican interior — the large expat population and the boutique hotel density have driven prices above Mexican norms. Budget travellers can use the market and simple posadas; the splurge ceiling is as high as anywhere in Mexico. Per person per day.
The Mercado Municipal gorditas (MXN 15–25 each; the most authentic food in San Miguel), the historic centre walk (free), the Parroquia interior (free), and the Instituto Allende galleries (free) give the essential San Miguel.

Balloon companies call 48 hours ahead with a weather window. Book tentatively and confirm the evening before. Globos de Papel is the best operator.
Semana Santa processions, flower carpets, and re-enactments fill San Miguel’s centro. Book rooms 4+ months ahead or you won’t find any.
Guanajuato is 1.5 hours west by bus (100 MXN). Its tunnels, alleys, and Juárez theatre are arguably more beautiful than San Miguel.
La Gruta hot springs are 10km from the centre. The cave pool (38°C) is the finest; go Monday–Thursday when it’s uncrowded.
The Sanctuary of Atotonilco (13km north) has the most ornate Baroque interior in the Americas. Free entry; 1 hour; go early morning.
The gorditas stall at the Mercado Municipal at 7am is San Miguel’s finest breakfast. Arrive early — they sell out by 9am.
