Iquitos is the largest city in the world with no road connection — a metropolis of 500,000 accessible only by air or river, deep in the Peruvian Amazon. The city was the wealthiest in South America during the rubber boom of the 1890s, when fortunes made from Hevea brasiliensis built the azulejo-tiled mansions of the Malecón Tarapacá and the Casa de Hierro (the Iron House, designed by Gustave Eiffel).

Iquitos is the gateway to the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve — the largest flooded forest reserve in Peru (21,000km²; the finest wildlife density in the Western Amazon) — and to the finest pink river dolphin (boto) watching in South America. The Belén floating market and village, 3km from the centre, is the most authentic river market in Peru.

Amazon Jungle & Wildlife Lodges

The Peruvian Amazon accessible from Iquitos has the finest wildlife density in the Western Amazon — 500+ bird species, 13 primate species, and the highest pink river dolphin population in Peru in the rivers surrounding the city. The jungle lodges (1–3h by speedboat; 2–3 night minimum) provide guided night walks, dawn bird-watching, and canoe through the flooded forest.

💡 Belén floating market at 6am (mototaxi S/4; free entry; local guide S/60–80 to explain the jungle produce) is the most extraordinary market in the Amazon — the dugout canoe arrivals, the medicinal plant stalls, and the scale of the Amazon produce culture.

The Amazon River & Malecon Tarapacá

The Amazon River at Iquitos is 2.5km wide and navigable by ocean-going vessels — the rubber boom mansions of the Malecón Tarapacá (the Casa Morey, the Casa Ransa, the Casa de Hierro designed by Gustave Eiffel) face the river from the promenade. At dusk the river turns from brown to copper; pink dolphins occasionally breach in front of the mansions.

💡 The pink river dolphin (boto) is reliably seen on the Itaya River (5 min by boat from the Malecón; S/30/hour) at dawn and dusk — July to November has the highest visibility. The pink colour intensifies when the dolphin is excited.

Pink River Dolphin (Boto) & Pacaya Samiria

The pink river dolphin (boto; Inia geoffrensis) turns a distinctive rosy-pink colour as it matures. The best sightings around Iquitos are on the Itaya River at dawn and dusk, and in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. The boto plays a central role in Amazonian mythology and is protected under Peruvian law.

💡 All wildlife lodges (1–3h from Iquitos; S/400–800/night all-inclusive) include guided night walks for tarantulas and caimans, dawn bird-watching, and canoe through the flooded forest — 2 nights minimum.

Belén & the Floating Village

Belén is the floating market district of Iquitos — the innermost section of Belén has houses built on rafts that rise and fall with the Amazon River level (5–6m between low and high water). The market at 6am has the finest range of Amazonian jungle produce in Peru: ayahuasca vine, palm heart, live fish, dried insects, and the medicinal plants of the rainforest pharmacopoeia.

💡 The Malecón Tarapacá at dusk (free; the azulejo-tiled rubber boom mansions; the 2.5km-wide Amazon turning copper) is the finest free evening in Iquitos — pink dolphins occasionally breach in front of the Casa de Hierro.

Eating & Drinking

Iquitos has the most specifically Amazonian food culture in this guide: the jungle ingredients unavailable anywhere else in Peru. The tacacho con cecina (the roasted and mashed green plantain ball served with the smoked dried pork — the cecina; the most specific Iquitos breakfast; PEN 8–20; available at any Iquitos breakfast stall from 7am), the inchicapi (the chicken soup thickened with the peanut and the yuca flour and the coriander; the most comforting Iquitos soup; PEN 10–20), the paiche (the arapaima; the world’s largest freshwater fish at up to 200kg; the grilled or stewed paiche at any Iquitos Amazon-cuisine restaurant; PEN 30–60 for a generous portion; the finest and most expensive freshwater fish in Amazonian cooking), the juanes (the rice and chicken or fish parcel steamed inside the bijao leaf; the most eaten Iquitos festive food — prepared on the Feast of San Juan on 24 June; PEN 5–15 from market stalls), the camu camu juice (the Amazonian fruit with the world’s highest vitamin C content — 30–60 times the content of an orange; the sour, bright-orange juice; PEN 3–10 from any Iquitos juice stall), and the chicha de maiz (the fermented corn drink; PEN 3–8 from the local picanterias) are the six essential Iquitos food and drink experiences.

Getting Around

The mototaxi (the three-wheeled auto-rickshaw converted from a motorcycle; PEN 3–5 for any Iquitos city journey; always negotiate before boarding; the standard maximum for any city journey is PEN 8 — if the driver asks for more, take the next mototaxi) is the primary Iquitos city transport. The motorcar (the larger covered rear-cabin motorcycle taxi; PEN 5–10; more comfortable for 2 passengers) is the upgrade. For the Belén district, the mototaxi to the Belén port (PEN 4–6) then the small motorboat lancha into the floating market district (PEN 5–15 for the tour; negotiate with the boatmen at the port). For Playa Nanay (the river beach on the Nanay River; 10 min by boat from the Iquitos port; PEN 5–10 return by the public lanchas from the Nanay ferry port). The jungle lodge transfers: the lodge speedboat picks up from the Iquitos port (USD 30–80 pp depending on distance; 1–3h each way).

Three Days in Iquitos

Day 1: Iquitos city (Malecon, Casa de Hierro, Belén). Days 2–3: jungle lodge (pink dolphins at dawn, caiman at night, piranha fishing, forest walk).

Day 1
Iquitos City: Malecon, Casa de Hierro & Belén

Belén floating market at 6am (mototaxi S/4; local guide S/60–80; the Amazon produce market). Casa de Hierro (the Eiffel-designed iron building; Plaza de Armas). Malecón Tarapacá at dusk (the rubber boom mansions; the copper river; the pink dolphins).

💡 Iquitos requires a minimum of 2 nights for the city experience (Belén market, Malecón, pink dolphins) plus 2 nights at a jungle lodge for the wildlife — 4 nights total is the correct Iquitos allocation.

Day 2
Jungle Lodge Arrival & Pink Dolphins at Dawn (Day 1 of 2)

Dawn boat on the Itaya River (pink dolphins at 6am; S/30/hour). Manatee rescue centre (Cetas-IIAP; 10 min from the centre). Afternoon: Belén market jungle spice section.

💡 The flood season (November–May) makes the jungle accessible by canoe through the treetops — the flooded forest habitats are invisible in the dry season, and the wildlife concentrations on the flooded riverbanks are the finest in the Amazon.

Day 3
Piranha Fishing, Community Visit & Return to Iquitos

2–3 night jungle lodge (speedboat from Iquitos port; 1–3h; guided night walk for tarantulas; dawn bird-watching with 500 species; canoe through the flooded forest in November–May).

💡 LATAM and Sky Airline flights from Lima to Iquitos (1.5h; from S/150 one-way; multiple daily departures) are essential — there is no overland route to Iquitos. Book 2 weeks ahead in season.

What Does Iquitos Cost?

The city itself is very affordable (mototaxi PEN 4, paiche dinner PEN 50). The jungle lodge package is the main cost: USD 80–300 pp/night all-inclusive. Budget at least 2 nights at a lodge for the essential experiences. Per person per day.
