Antwerp is the finest city in Belgium after Bruges — a port city of 530,000 on the Scheldt River with the finest railway station in the world (Antwerpen-Centraal; the 1905 Baroque-Renaissance terminal; the finest railway interior in Europe), the finest diamond district in the world (the Diamantkwartier; 84% of the world’s uncut diamonds traded in a 4-block area around the station), and the finest 17th-century painting in existence (Peter Paul Rubens’ “Descent from the Cross” (1614); in the Cathedral of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal); the finest single Gothic cathedral in Belgium).

Antwerp is also the fashion capital of Belgium (the Antwerp Six — the group of six Antwerp-trained designers including Dries Van Noten and Ann Demeulemeester who revolutionised international fashion at London Fashion Week in 1988; the ModeMuseum (MoMu; the finest fashion museum in the world)) and the MAS Museum (Museum aan de Stroom; the finest panoramic rooftop view of the Antwerp port and the Scheldt; free rooftop; the finest harbour view in Belgium).

Eating & Drinking

Antwerp eating is the most diverse and the most fashionably sophisticated in Belgium: the bolleke (the distinctive round-bottomed De Koninck beer glass — Antwerp’s own amber ale; the De Koninck Brewery tour on the Mechelsesteenweg (€16; includes 3 beers); “een bolleke” is the Antwerp ordering phrase for a De Koninck), the garnaalkroketten (the Belgian prawn croquettes — the finest single Belgian starter; €8–14; universally available), the beef stew in De Koninck ale at any Antwerp brasserie (€18–30), and the Antwerp speculas (the spiced gingerbread biscuit from the Antwerp biscuit makers — Elixir d’Anvers, the local digestif liqueur). The Nationalestraat fashion district restaurants and bars (the finest concentration of design-conscious restaurants in Belgium), the `t Zuid neighbourhood (the most Antwerp-characteristic neighbourhood; the local cafes; the Michelin-starred restaurants), and the Grote Markt brasseries (the tourist-priced but most atmospheric option) are the three Antwerp restaurant concentrations.
