Berat is called “the city of a thousand windows” for a reason that becomes immediately clear from the Gorica Bridge: hundreds of white Ottoman stone houses cascade down two opposing hillsides, each building’s upper story projecting over the one below, each wall dominated by rows of tall windows that face each other across the Osum River. It is one of the finest urban compositions in Europe. UNESCO made it a World Heritage Site in 2008.

The extraordinary thing about Berat is that it is not preserved as a museum: people still live in the castle. 300 residents inhabit the medieval citadel alongside Byzantine churches and an icon museum. The town below is active and growing. Berat is living history in the most literal sense.

Top Sights in Berat

Mangalem Quarter & the Thousand Windows

Mangalem Quarter & the Thousand Windows

Mangalem (the Ottoman Muslim quarter; free; west bank of the Osum River; 10-minute walk from the main road) is a hillside of white Ottoman stone houses with distinctive overhanging upper stories, each with dozens of large windows — the source of Berat’s name as “the city of a thousand windows.” The houses cascade down the hillside in three overlapping rows, each building reflecting in the windows of the one below.

💡 The finest view of the thousand-windows composition is from the Gorica bridge at golden hour (6am or 6pm). The second best is from the Berat Castle walls looking down. Both are free.

Berat Castle & the Living Citadel

Berat Castle & the Living Citadel

Berat Castle (Kalaja; €2; walk 20 minutes uphill from the Mangalem quarter or taxi) is one of the best-preserved Byzantine citadels in Albania — and uniquely, it is still inhabited: approximately 300 people live within the 13th-century walls in traditional stone houses alongside the Onufri Museum and several Byzantine churches. The castle is not a ruin: it is a functioning Albanian village inside medieval fortifications.

💡 Enter the castle in the morning for the finest light. The Onufri Museum (€2; extraordinary collection of 16th-century Albanian Orthodox icons by master painter Onufri) is inside the Church of the Dormition of St Mary within the castle walls. Combine both in 2 hours.

Gorica & the Old Stone Bridge

Gorica & the Old Stone Bridge

Gorica (the Orthodox Christian quarter; east bank of the Osum; connected to Mangalem by the 18th-century Gorica Bridge) contains the second cluster of thousand-windowed Ottoman houses, a mirror image of Mangalem across the river. The Gorica Bridge itself (Ottoman; single stone arch; free; photogenic from both banks) is the historic crossing point between the two quarters and the finest photographic composition in Berat.

💡 Walk from Mangalem across the Gorica Bridge to the east bank for the best opposite-direction view of the thousand windows. The morning light (8–10am) hits the Mangalem windows directly from the east; this is the canonical Berat photograph.

Cobo Winery & Berat Wine Region

Cobo Winery & Berat Wine Region

Berat sits in one of Albania’s oldest wine-producing valleys — wine has been made here continuously since the Roman period. Çobo Winery (10km from Berat; winery tours from 1,500 ALL per person including 4 wines; book at the winery) is the finest producer in the region, making Shesh i Zi (native red variety; full-bodied and tannic) and Pulsës (light indigenous white). The surrounding Berat valley has 8+ wineries, several offering free tastings.

💡 A wine tasting at Çobo Winery combined with a drive through the Osum Canyon (30km north of Berat) makes the finest full-day road trip from Berat. Ask at your guesthouse to arrange transport (€20–30 for a driver).

Eating & Drinking

Berat restaurants are excellent by Albanian standards. Tavë berati (baked lamb in white sauce specific to the Berat region; 800–1,200 ALL) is the dish to order here rather than Tirana. The local Shesh i Zi red wine (from the Berat valley vineyards; 400 ALL per glass at most restaurants) is the best-value wine in Albania. White byrek (“byrek me gjëllë” in Berat style; 150 ALL) differs from the Tirana version — thicker filo, richer filling. Several restaurants occupy the castle walls inside the citadel, serving dinner with a panoramic view of the two town quarters below. Mangalem has the highest concentration of good restaurants within 200 metres of the old stone bridge.

Travel Tips

🌤

Visit the Gorica Bridge at 8am for the finest “thousand windows” photograph — the light is direct on Mangalem

The morning sun from the east hits the rows of windows of the Mangalem quarter directly from 8–10am, producing the warm reflection-in-glass effect that makes the thousand windows’s famous images.

🚶

Wear good walking shoes — the castle is a 200-metre elevation gain from the bridge

The walk from the Gorica Bridge to the castle entrance is 20 minutes of steep cobblestoned lane.

🍴

Order tavë berati specifically — the Berat version of baked lamb is distinct from tavë kosi (Tirana version)

Tavë berati uses a thinner yogurt sauce with a specific combination of lamb intestine casings and spices unique to the Berat region.

📶

Combine Berat with the Osum Canyon (30km north) for the finest road trip in central Albania

The Osum Canyon (€3 for suspension bridges; boat tour €10 per person from Çorovoda; 30km north of Berat) is a limestone gorge of 100-metre walls carved by the Osum River.

🍾

Visit Çobo Winery for a tasting session — Albanian wine is excellent and almost unknown globally

Berat valley wines (Shesh i Zi red; Kallmet; the indigenous Albanian varietals) are produced from vines grown at 300–600m since antiquity. Visit Çobo Winery (4km from Berat; free tastings by appointment; book via Facebook).

🗺

Berat is 2 hours south of Tirana and 2 hours north of Gjirokastrër — the ideal road trip stopping point

A Tirana–Berat–Gjirokastrër–Sarandë road trip (4–5 days) is the finest Albania overview: Berat + Osum Canyon (Day 2), Gjirokastrër (Day 3), drive the Riviera (Day 4), Sarandë and Ksamil (Day 5).
