Kotor sits at the innermost corner of the Bay of Kotor, where grey limestone mountains drop straight into the sea. Its old town, a maze of stone lanes and squares inside Venetian walls, is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Above it, the walls zigzag up the mountainside to the fortress of St John. Cruise ships often dock right outside the gates, so mornings and evenings are the calmest times to explore.

Wander the lanes and squares, then climb the roughly 1,300 steps along the walls to St John’s Fortress, about 260m above the bay. An entry fee of around €15 applies.

Start early or late in summer and carry water; the free Ladder of Kotor trail is a longer alternative.
