Perast is the most beautiful village on the Bay of Kotor — and possibly the finest small village on the entire Adriatic coast. A single 300-metre baroque waterfront of 17 palaces, a 10th-century church, and an open-air restaurant strip faces two islands in the middle of the bay: St George (San Djordja), a Benedictine monastery dating to the 12th century on a natural island, and Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Škrpjela), a manmade island built by local fishermen over 200 years from rocks, sunken ships, and votive offerings after a miraculous icon of the Madonna was discovered here in 1452.

Perast has a permanent population of around 300 people and a single main street. It is 13km northwest of Kotor (15 min by car; 45 min by public bus) and functions best as a half-day or full-day trip from Kotor rather than a base.

Top Sights in Perast

Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Škrpjela)

Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Škrpjela)

Our Lady of the Rocks (boat €5 return from the central Perast jetty; church interior free; open daily) is a manmade island built over 200 years of deliberate rock-dumping and votive ship-sinking, culminating in a Baroque church completed in 1725. The interior contains 68 silver votive tablets (ex-votos) commissioned by local sailors in gratitude for survival at sea, and a cycle of oil paintings by the Baroque master Tripo Kokolja (c. 1700). The island is 150 metres from the Perast waterfront.

💡 The boat crossing from the jetty takes 4 minutes. The boatmen leave when the boat is full (usually 2–6 passengers). There is no timetable — simply arrive at the jetty and wait. The last boat typically returns by 7pm.

St George Island (Ostrvo Sv. Djordja)

St George Island (Ostrvo Sv. Djordja)

St George Island (the natural island immediately east of Our Lady of the Rocks) is home to a 12th-century Benedictine monastery that is still active and closed to visitors — but the exterior, visible from the Perast waterfront and from the Our Lady of the Rocks island, is one of the most photographed images on the bay: a dark-cypress-crowned island with a small church tower, reflected in the still water of the inner bay.

💡 The finest photograph of St George Island is taken from the western end of the Perast waterfront at dawn (the light is flat and the water is still) or from the jetty of Our Lady of the Rocks at 4pm when the light is from the west.

The Perast Baroque Palaces & the Bujovic Palace Museum

The Perast Baroque Palaces & the Bujovic Palace Museum

The Perast waterfront is flanked by 17 baroque palaces built by Venetian-era sea captains and merchants between the 16th and 18th centuries. The Bujovic Palace (Muzej Perast; €2.50; open daily) is the finest example: a 1694 water-gate palazzo with a loggia and a small museum of navigation charts, Venetian artefacts, and a Tiepolo-influenced oil painting of Our Lady of the Rocks. The adjacent Stankovic Palace and the Palace of the Balovici family are the most architecturally striking.

💡 The Bujovic Palace Museum’s collection is small (6 rooms) but well-presented in authentic period interiors. The ground-floor water gate — where supply boats would have docked directly into the palace through an arch at water level — is the finest surviving example of Venetian Adriatic residential architecture in Montenegro.

The Church of Saint Nicholas & the Bell Towers

The Church of Saint Nicholas & the Bell Towers

The Church of Saint Nicholas (Crkva Sv. Nikola; 1616 AD; free; usually open) is the largest church in Perast and contains the most important collection of maritime ex-voto paintings on the Adriatic. The adjacent unfinished Bell Tower (12th century foundations; 55 metres; never completed) is the most conspicuous feature of the Perast skyline and can be climbed for €2 for the finest aerial view of both islands.

💡 The view from the Bell Tower (90 steps) at 8am before tour boats arrive is extraordinary: both islands calm in the still bay, the baroque palaces below, and the Orjen mountain range above 2,000m in the background.

Eating & Drinking

Perast has a single waterfront street with 6–8 restaurants and cafes. The standard is uniformly high given the small size of the village: fresh fish from the bay (branzino from €12/kg; black risotto from €9), rakija plum brandy poured from unlabelled bottles, and the local dessert priganice (deep-fried dough with honey; from €3). Restaurant Ževljak (western end of the waterfront) is the most established and has the longest menu; Conte (east end) has the finest water-level terrace directly above the bay. Book at least 24 hours ahead for dinner in July–August.

Travel Tips

Arrive before 9am or after 5pm — tour groups from Kotor flood the village between 10am and 4pm

Perast receives hundreds of day visitors between 10am and 4pm from Kotor, Dubrovnik, and cruise ships.

🍸

Take the boat to Our Lady of the Rocks before 9am for the finest light and the church to yourself

The ex-voto silver tablets and Kokolja’s oil cycle in the Church of Our Lady of the Rocks are poorly lit with overhead electric light &mdash.

🚧

Perast has no parking lot — park in the field 300m north of the village and walk along the waterfront path

Perast’s single access road ends at a small square at the north end of the village with limited unofficial parking.

Combine Perast with the Kotor fortress hike for a perfect full day from either city

Leave Kotor at 7am for the Fortress of St John hike (40–60 min up; 30 min down). Return to Kotor old town for coffee (9am; still manageable crowds).

🍴

Bring cash for the boat to the islands — boatmen typically don’t have card readers

The boat crossing to Our Lady of the Rocks (€5 return) is operated by individual fishermen who are not equipped for card payments.

📷

Bring a tripod for the 5am dawn photograph of both islands reflected in the completely still bay

Perast’s bay is sheltered from all wind directions and is mirror-still before sunrise.
