Trinidad’s Plaza Mayor is the finest colonial square in Cuba — a palm-fringed cobblestone plaza enclosed by pastel-painted baroque mansions, the Iglesia Parroquial de la Santísima Trinidad, and the Museo Histórico Municipal. The surrounding streets of the Barrio de Congresos are an intact 18th-century neighbourhood of tile-roofed mansions and cathedral-scale churches.
💡 Walk the historic centre early morning (before 9am) or at dusk. The staircase of Calle Simón Bolívar leading up from the plaza is the finest viewpoint in the city — free, always open, spectacular at golden hour.
Playa Ancón (12km south of Trinidad by taxi; CUP 100 return; 20 mins) is one of the finest white-sand beaches on Cuba’s south coast — calm, warm, turquoise water, snorkelling over a reef, and almost no development beyond two beach hotels with open bar access for day visitors.
💡 Take a horse-drawn cart (coche) for part of the journey through sugar cane fields — the combination of colonial town, cane fields, and Caribbean beach in a single day is one of the finest experiences on the island.
The Valle de los Ingenios (Sugar Mill Valley; UNESCO World Heritage; 15km northeast of Trinidad; taxi CUP 150 return) contains the ruins of 75 sugar mills that made 19th-century Trinidad the wealthiest city in Cuba. The Iznaga Estate tower (45 metres; climb for the valley panorama; CUP 20) and the preserved slave quarters are the most significant surviving evidence of the colonial sugar economy.
💡 Combine with a steam train excursion that departs Trinidad station — the 1919 steam locomotive runs through the valley twice weekly in season; ask your casa host for the current schedule.
The Canchanchara (the oldest bar in Cuba; Calle Villena 56; a courtyard under a roof of old roof tiles) serves the canchanchara cocktail (aguardiente, lemon, honey, and water; the precursor to the mojito; invented here in the 19th century). The Casa de la Música de Trinidad (outdoor staircase stage; nightly from 9pm; CUP 100 cover) hosts the finest live salsa and son in any setting outside Havana.
💡 The Casa de la Música staircase fills by 10pm with locals and travellers — dance classes (salsa) are offered at the bottom from 7pm before the main show starts. One of the most memorable evenings available in Cuba.
Trinidad eating is a smaller, more intimate version of the Havana paladar scene. The essential stop is the rooftop paladar Sol Ananda (Calle Frank País 32; panoramic view of terracotta rooftops and the Caribbean beyond; from CUC 8 for a main course). La Botija (Calle Simón Bolívar 26; historic house; excellent ropa vieja and lobster) is the most reliable paladar in the centre. The Canchanchara courtyard bar is the finest place for the pre-dinner drink: a canchanchara cocktail in an 18th-century courtyard for around CUP 50.
Walk Plaza Mayor at 7am (before tour coaches; 2h). Iznaga Tower taxi excursion to the Valle de los Ingenios (CUP 150 return; ask your casa host; 3h). Return for lunch at Sol Ananda rooftop paladar. Afternoon: browse the craft market at the Plazuela de Real Cigüepa. Evening: canchanchara at the Canchanchara Bar; Casa de la Música staircase from 9pm (CUP 100 cover; salsa until midnight).
Casa breakfast at 8am. Taxi to Playa Ancón (CUP 100 return; 20 mins). Full beach day with snorkelling gear from the hotel day-use area. Return to Trinidad by 4pm. Afternoon walk through the Barrio de Congresos backstreets (the finest photography in the city; especially on Calle Cristo). Viazul bus to Havana at 7pm (6h; CUC 25; book day before).
The UNESCO historic centre is best appreciated at dawn and after 5pm when day-trip coaches have departed.
The nightly salsa on the outdoor staircase of the Casa de la Música involves locals dancing alongside visitors. Admission is around CUP 100.
Several Trinidad residents hire horses for rural excursions (around CUC 10–15 per hour; ask your casa host).
The pastel facades, cobblestones, and horse-drawn vehicles create a colour palette unique to Trinidad.
A Trinidad day divides naturally: historic centre at 7–10am, taxi to Playa Ancón by 10:30am (CUP 100 return; round-trip taxi arranged through your casa), beach until 3pm, return to the centre, live music from 9pm.
WiFi at the main plaza (ETECSA hotspot) requires pre-purchased scratch cards (1 CUP per hour from ETECSA kiosks). The connection is slow and unreliable.
