Castle Ruins and the Gauja River Valley
Sigulda Castle (Livonian Order; built 1207; the oldest Livonian Order castle in Latvia; the ruins on the cliff above the Gauja valley; free to visit externally; the castle walls and towers still standing; the finest viewpoint in Sigulda) overlooks the Gauja valley. Turaida Castle (3km east by forest path or cable car across the valley; €6; 10am–6pm; the finest surviving medieval castle in Latvia; red brick; 13th century; the Turaida Museum Reserve covers the castle, the Turaida Rose legend, and the ancient Livonian settlement history) is one of the most photographed buildings in Latvia.
💡 Cross the Gauja valley by the cable car (Gauja gondola; €7 return; 10 minutes each way; the best aerial view of the sandstone valley and river) to reach Turaida Castle. The Turaida Rose Garden (adjacent to the castle; free; the garden planted in memory of the 17th-century Turaida Rose legend — a young woman who sacrificed her life for love) and the Livonian song festivals held in the castle grounds in summer are the two additional experiences.
Gauja National Park (the largest national park in Latvia; sandstone cliffs rising 30–40m above the Gauja River; ancient buried valleys carved by glacial meltwater; the finest river valley landscape in the Baltic States) surrounds Sigulda on all sides. The main walking routes: the Sigulda–Turaida forest trail (3km; free; following the Gauja riverbank and passing Gutmānis Cave; the finest short walk in Latvia), the Krimulda manor trail (from the cable car landing; 2km; to the Krimulda rehabilitation sanatorium and the valley viewpoints), and the full valley circuit (10km; 4–5h; the complete Sigulda valley experience).

Gutmānis Cave (2km from Sigulda on the Gauja riverbank path; free; open all hours; the largest cave in the Baltic States; 18.8m wide, 12m high, 19m deep; carved into the sandstone cliff by the Gauja River over millennia) has inscriptions on its walls dating from 1520 — the oldest dated inscriptions in Latvia. The cave walls display centuries of carved names, dates, coats of arms, and messages, making it simultaneously a geological curiosity and a living palimpsest of Latvian history.
💡 Walk to Gutmānis Cave from Sigulda town (2km; 30 mins on the riverside path; free; the path is well-maintained year-round). The cave is most atmospheric in the morning before tour groups arrive. The oldest dated inscription (1520; visible with patience near the cave entrance; carved in the sandstone with a date and initials) is the most historically significant graffiti in Latvia.
The Sigulda bobsled track (Bazīnicas iela 3; the only Olympic-standard bobsled run in the Baltic States; 1,420m; built 1986; public rides available in winter and on a wheeled bobsled in summer; prices €15–30 per ride depending on the vehicle) is one of the most accessible bobsled experiences in Europe. The track runs through the Gauja valley forest and reaches speeds of 80–110 km/h on the wheeled summer version (slower than the ice version but the lateral G-forces are substantial).
💡 Book the bobsled ride online (bobsled.lv; summer wheeled rides daily May–September; winter ice rides December–March; the wheeled summer experience is available to all visitors without prior training; arrive 30 minutes before your slot). The “vučko” bobsled ride (the passenger vehicle steered by a professional driver; the most popular public experience; €15–20) is the standard option.
Sigulda has a modest but functional food scene. Aparjods (the hotel restaurant; the finest dining in Sigulda; Pils iela 8; €15–30 for a full meal; Latvian cuisine with Gauja valley produce) is the best option for dinner. The Turaida Castle museum cafe (€5–10; Latvian soups and sandwiches; in the castle courtyard in summer) is the most atmospheric lunch stop. The Sigulda market (near the bus station; daily in summer; fresh Latvian produce; rye bread and local honey) is the morning food stop. For adventure day visitors: the van food stalls near the bobsled track entrance offer grill food and Latvian beer (€5–8) on weekends.
9am: bus from Riga (1h 15m; €3). Sigulda Castle ruins (10am; free; cliff viewpoint over the Gauja valley; 30 mins). Start the Gauja riverbank walk (10:30am; 2km to Gutmānis Cave; 30 mins). Gutmānis Cave (free; cave inscriptions; 30 mins). Continue to Turaida Castle (1km; 20 mins walk; €6 entry; 1.5h; Turaida Museum Reserve + castle towers + rose garden). Return via cable car (€7 return; 10 mins across the valley; best valley view). Lunch at Aparjods (€15–20). Bobsled ride (book morning; wheeled summer; €15–20; 3pm slot; 10 minutes). 5pm bus back to Riga.
Bus from Riga (Ecolines or Nordeka; from Riga International Bus Station; 1h 15m; from €3; multiple daily) is the standard transport.
The Gauja cable car (gondola; €7 return; 10 minutes each way; every 30 minutes; the Turaida side gives the finest walk to the castle) is Sigulda’s finest 20-minute experience and the best Gauja valley overview.
The Sigulda–Cēsis route (30km; the P13 Gauja valley road; sandstone cliffs visible from the road; Cēsis medieval castle and brewery at the end) is doable in one day with a rental car or bicycle.
The Gutmānis Cave to Turaida Castle walking route (3–4km; 1.5h; sandstone bluffs; the medieval castle at the end; the Maija of Turaida rose garden memorial) is Latvia’s finest short walk.
Gauja River canoeing (rental from multiple Sigulda operators; €20–40/day; one of Latvia’s finest summer activities; book the evening before in peak season; best section is Valmiera to Cēsis).
Sigulda in October (the Gauja valley birch and oak forest turning gold and amber; the sandstone cliffs unchanged; the river reflecting the autumn sky) is the finest version of the Sigulda landscape.
