Jar Site 2 (Hai Hin Phu Salato; 25km south of Phonsavan; USD 5 entry; 93 jars scattered across two wooded hills; the most atmospheric jar site — the jars partially shaded by trees rather than in the open grassland; the forest canopy creating a more intimate and mysterious atmosphere; the short climb between the two jar clusters; the finest single-site photography in the Plain of Jars for the combination of light and composition; the bamboo bridge between the two hillsides; less visited than Site 1) is the most photographically beautiful jar site and the second essential visit.

Jar Site 3 (Hai Hin Lat Khai; 35km southeast of Phonsavan; the most remote of the three UNESCO jar sites; accessible via a 500m walk through rice paddies from the road; 150 jars in two groups across a rural landscape; the quietest and least visited of the main sites; the finest experience of the jars in a working agricultural landscape; the rice paddy approach; the village of Lat Khai visible beyond the jar field; the most meditative jar site atmosphere) is the least visited and most serene of the three main jar sites and rewarding if combining all three in a single day.

Phonsavan has a modest food scene. The Bamboo Restaurant (the most consistently recommended in Phonsavan; the set Lao menu; the jeow bong chilli paste with sticky rice; the mok pa; USD 5–10) and the Craters Cafe (the breakfast cafe; the Lao filter coffee; the baguette; the gathering point for jar site visitors before the morning tour departure; the best coffee in Phonsavan at 20,000 LAK per cup) are the two essential stops. The Phonsavan morning market (the earliest market in central Laos; from 5am; the Hmong, Lao, and Khmu traders selling highland produce; the fresh morning mushrooms; the smoked meats; the fresh vegetables from the highland farms; the most authentic market in Xieng Khouang) is the finest early morning food experience before the jar site tuk-tuk departs.
The Xieng Khouang Plateau has the highest unexploded ordnance density in the world. Marked red ropes at jar sites are safety boundaries, not suggestions — never step beyond them.
The Phonsavan road approach (Vientiane to Phonsavan; 8–10h by bus; the mountain road; hairpin turns; poor road surfaces; motion sickness extremely common) is the worst bus journey in Laos.

The Xieng Khouang Plateau at 1,200m averages 20–25°C by day and 10–15°C at night in peak season (November–February). Pack a fleece — evenings are genuinely cold.
