Shwesandaw Pagoda (depart 5:15am on e-bike; 15 minutes from Nyaung U; free to climb; faces east) gives the finest panorama of the Bagan plain at sunrise. Arrive by 5:30am before other groups.
The 2,000 Bagan temples include 1,500+ smaller unnamed structures with no entry charge, no visitor numbers, and in many cases original wall murals visible through the doorway.
The Bagan central plain (October–April; 30–38°C; zero shade between temples) requires 2 litres of water minimum per person. Carry all water from your guesthouse — nothing sold between sites.
The Bagan Archaeological Zone pass (USD 25 for 3 days; available at entry gates; checked at major temples) is mandatory for all visitors. Keep it visible — rangers check at the main temples.
