Hol Chan Marine Reserve (7km south of San Pedro; USD 15 entry; the channel through the reef crest; nurse sharks, stingrays, sea turtles, and eagle rays) and Shark Ray Alley (the shallow sandbar with habituated nurse sharks at 1m depth and southern stingrays) combine into the best half-day snorkel from Ambergris Caye.
💡 Book the Hol Chan + Shark Ray Alley combo on the San Pedro waterfront (USD 25–40; 2.5h; departs 9am or 2pm). Nurse sharks reach 3m and are non-aggressive — don’t touch (the guide enforces this as a rule, not a suggestion).
San Pedro (the only town on Ambergris; the waterfront; golf carts — the main island transport at USD 50–80/day; no private cars; the beach bars; painted wooden buildings; the northern resort strip) is the social and culinary frame for the island and the most atmospheric small Caribbean beach town in Central America.
💡 Rent a golf cart (USD 50–80/day; the essential Ambergris transport). The Elk Beach Bar (north beach; dock over the water; cold Belikin beer at BZD 4) at sunset is the quintessential Ambergris evening.
Bacalar Chico National Park (the northern tip of Ambergris; 11,919 hectares spanning the Belize–Mexico border; 2h boat from San Pedro; USD 100–150 for the full-day tour; pristine Bacalar Chico reef, crocodile lagoon, the Maya San Juan site, and manatee feeding zone) is the finest full-day natural experience from Ambergris.
💡 Book through the San Pedro Visitors Bureau (USD 100–150; the Bacalar Chico reef is the most undisturbed snorkel from Ambergris; the crocodile sighting is from the boat). The best reason to stay a 3rd day on the island.
The finest seafood in Ambergris comes from the San Pedro waterfront restaurants. The grilled Caribbean lobster (in season June 15–Feb 14; USD 25–40 per tail; the definitive Belize meal at any beachside restaurant), the conch ceviche (the diced conch in lime, cilantro, and habanero; USD 8–12; the finest Belize appetiser), and the fresh grouper (USD 15–25) are the three essential menu items. Elvi Kitchen (the most celebrated restaurant in San Pedro; open since 1974; the sandy floor; the Sunday BBQ; USD 20–40) and the Reef Bar (the beach dock; grilled lobster; Belikin beer; the sunset over the reef) are the two finest Ambergris dining experiences. The Belikin beer (the national beer; BZD 4 cold from any beach bar) is the essential Belizean drink.
The Belize Dollar fixed rate (exactly 2 BZD = 1 USD; enforced by the Central Bank; the simplest Caribbean currency arithmetic; divide any BZD price by 2 for the USD equivalent).
The Great Blue Hole day trip (USD 280–320 from San Pedro; a 3-dive day including the Blue Hole at 40m, Halfmoon Caye Wall, and a coral reef; departs 6am; book 1 day ahead; snorkelling version USD 150) is one of the world’s great dive experiences.
The Belizean lobster season (Caribbean spiny lobster; in season June 15–February 14; USD 3–8/lb directly from the fishing boats at Caye Caulker or Hopkins dock at 6–8am; a fraction of restaurant prices; local restaurants will cook your own purchased fish for USD 3–5 corkage).
The Gladden Spit whale shark aggregation (April–May full moon periods; the cubera snapper spawn draws whale sharks up to 12m; snorkel tours from Placencia USD 100–150; book 3 days ahead; the most extraordinary marine encounter in the Americas; plan your Belize dates around this if possible).
Belize lobster season (June 15–February 14; ordering lobster outside season is illegal and subject to fine; the close season February 15–June 14 protects the breeding population).
Belize City to San Ignacio (2h by bus), to Hopkins (3h), to Placencia (3.5h), to Ambergris Caye (75 mins by water taxi; 10 mins by domestic flight).
Morning snorkel trip to Hol Chan Marine Reserve — the cut in the reef concentrates turtles, rays, and nurse sharks into water rarely deeper than 9m, and Shark Ray Alley delivers exactly what the name promises. Back in San Pedro by 1pm for tacos on Middle Street, then a golf-cart wander south to the quieter beach bars.
Two very different days. Secret Beach, 40 minutes north-west by cart, is shallow, warm, and built for doing nothing with a drink in hand. The alternative leaves at 5:30am: the Blue Hole trip (USD 280–320) — a 40m descent past stalactites inside Lighthouse Reef, bookended by two of the best wall dives in the Caribbean. Book it the day you arrive.
