Saona Island (25km southeast of Punta Cana; part of Parque Nacional del Este; the catamaran day trip: USD 80–100; white sand, reef snorkelling, the natural pool sandbar stop, and open bar on the catamaran return) is the most photogenic Caribbean day out from the resort and the most popular Punta Cana excursion.
💡 Book through the Bayahibe dock operators (USD 15–20 less than resort packages for the same trip). Depart 9am to reach the island before the armada of other catamarans. The natural pool sandbar stop is the most Instagrammable moment.
Coco Bongo (Plaza San Juan; the largest nightclub in the Caribbean; USD 70 pre-sale, USD 85 walk-up; nightly from 11pm; acrobatics, live bands, DJ sets, and celebrity impersonators in a 5,000-capacity theatre club; the most Las Vegas-style nightlife in the Caribbean) defines the Punta Cana evening experience.
💡 Buy Coco Bongo tickets online (USD 70; open bar included; the VIP table upgrade (USD 120+) gives a better sightline for the acrobatics). Arrive at 11pm opening; the best acrobatic performances are 12:30–2am.
Punta Cana dining divides into the all-inclusive resort restaurants (all inclusive in the room rate; quality ranges from basic buffets at 3-star resorts to genuine fine dining at Tortuga Bay, Sanctuary Cap Cana, and Eden Roc) and the independent restaurants for visitors who leave the resort zone. La Yola (the finest restaurant in Cap Cana; the sea-facing terrace; Dominican-style fresh fish; USD 30–60/person; the best non-resort dining in Punta Cana). Jellyfish Restaurant (Playa Bávaro; the beachfront terrace; the fresh lobster; USD 25–50; the most atmospheric independent beach restaurant in Punta Cana). The Dominican street food (outside the resort zone on the Bavaro road: the pollo al carbon (charcoal chicken; DOP 250), the sancocho (the stewed root vegetable and meat soup; the national Dominican dish; DOP 200), and the fresh coconut water (DOP 50) are the three best street food stops for resort escapees).
