Santo Domingo, the Dominican capital, is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas. The city moved to its present site on the west bank of the Ozama River in 1502, and its Colonial Zone was inscribed by UNESCO in 1990.

The Colonial Zone (Zona Colonial) holds a remarkable list of firsts: the first cathedral in the Americas, the oldest fortress and the oldest paved street. Around it, a large modern city of over a million people stretches along the Caribbean coast.
