An ancient town on a small Black Sea peninsula, packed with medieval churches
This 13th–14th-century church is decorated with bands of brick, stone and green ceramic discs. The interior is often closed for restoration.

Wooden-fronted houses lean over cobbled lanes. Ruined churches, such as the 5th-century Old Metropolis, stand among them.

Small fountains, wells and fortress gates are scattered around the peninsula. The Church of St Stephen, with frescoes from 1599, is one of the few you can enter.

The wooden windmill on the causeway is a landmark at the entrance to the old town. It has been rebuilt several times.

Try grilled fish, tarator (cold yoghurt and cucumber soup) and mussels.
Restaurants by the harbour are pricey in summer; the new town is cheaper.
Burgas airport is about 30km away; buses go via Burgas bus station. Local buses link Nessebar with Sunny Beach in about 15 minutes.
A combined ticket covers several paid churches and museums; it was about €18 at a recent check.
Bulgaria adopted the euro (€) on 1 January 2026, replacing the lev. It remains one of the cheaper countries in the EU.

🛂 Entry rules: EES and ETIAS
Bulgaria is in the Schengen area, which has two EU border systems for non-EU visitors.
EES (in force): since 10 April 2026 the EU’s Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors’ passport details, fingerprints and a photo the first time they enter the Schengen area, replacing passport stamps. Allow extra time at the border on your first trip; later crossings are quicker. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens are not registered.
ETIAS (not yet running): a €20 online travel authorisation for visitors who don’t need a visa, such as UK, US, Canadian and Australian citizens. It hasn’t started and no start date has been confirmed, so nobody can apply yet; ignore websites that offer to “pre-register” you for a fee.
Visa-free visitors can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the whole Schengen area, not per country.
