Morondava, a sleepy fishing and port town on Madagascar’s west coast, is the gateway to the country’s most photographed sight: the Avenue of the Baobabs, where a dirt road runs between rows of towering, ancient trees that blaze gold at sunset.

Beyond the avenue lie the dry deciduous forests of Kirindy, full of lemurs and the elusive fossa, plus long sandy beaches and the boat-building village of Belo sur Mer. It is a relaxed base for a couple of unforgettable days.

Top Sights in Morondava

Avenue of the Baobabs

Avenue of the Baobabs

Madagascar’s defining image: a sandy track lined with dozens of majestic Grandidier’s baobabs up to 800 years old, magical at sunrise and sunset when the light turns the trunks copper.

💡 Come for both sunrise and sunset; the crowds thin and the light is best.

Kirindy Forest

Kirindy Forest

This dry forest reserve north of town is the best place in Madagascar to spot the fossa, the island’s top predator, along with giant jumping rats, sifaka and nocturnal lemurs.

💡 Night walks here are exceptional; stay over or start very early.

Baobab Amoureux

Baobab Amoureux

A short drive from the avenue, the ‘Lovers’ Baobabs’ are two trees twisted together over centuries, wrapped in local legend and a favourite photo stop.

💡 Combine it with the avenue on the same afternoon outing.

Morondava Beach

Morondava Beach

The town’s palm-fringed beach is a laid-back place to watch pirogues come and go, eat fresh seafood and catch the Mozambique Channel sunset when you are not at the avenue.

💡 Swimming is best at high tide; ask locally about currents.

Belo sur Mer

Belo sur Mer

A remote coastal village famed for hand-building wooden dhows on the beach, reached by a rough track or boat, offering pristine sand and a glimpse of traditional Vezo life.

💡 Access is seasonal and slow; go with a local operator.

Eating & Drinking

Morondava eats well from the sea, with grilled fish, prawns, crab and calamari served simply with rice or coconut sauce at beachside restaurants. A few French-run spots do good steak and crepes, and cold THB beer or fresh mango juice rounds off a hot day. Sunset seafood by the beach after the baobabs is the classic Morondava evening.

💰

Bring enough cash

ATMs are limited and unreliable; carry ariary for the whole stay.
