Ometepe’s food is simple, fresh and farm-grown: gallo pinto, grilled lake fish and chicken, plantains and tropical fruit at family-run comedores and eco-lodges. Many places grow their own produce, and a few offer plantain-based specialities unique to the island. Meals are unhurried, often with a lake or volcano view, and washed down with fresh juices or local rum.
Ferry across from Rivas, settle into an eco-lodge, and cool off in the crystal spring pools of Ojo de Agua.
Take a guided hike up Maderas to its crater lagoon or, for the fit, tackle the tougher Concepcion cone.
Trek to the San Ramon waterfall, then spot monkeys and birds at Charco Verde before the ferry back.
Ferries from Rivas/San Jorge run to a schedule and can be rough; plan arrivals and departures around them.
A scooter or bicycle is the best way to explore the island’s spread-out sights.
ATMs are few and unreliable; carry enough cordobas for your whole stay.
Both volcano hikes are demanding and easy to underestimate; always go with a local guide.
