⚠️ Travel advisory: check before you go

The US asks travellers to reconsider travel to Honduras because of crime, and advises against travel to Gracias a Dios. Tourist areas such as the Bay Islands and Copan see many visitors; take usual precautions.

Roatán is the largest of Honduras’s Bay Islands, in the Caribbean about 65km off the north coast. It sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the largest reef system in the Western Hemisphere, and is one of the Caribbean’s most affordable places to dive.

English is widely spoken, a legacy of the islands’ history. Most visitors stay on the west of the island, at West Bay’s beach or the laid-back village of West End.

Getting There & Around

Roatán’s airport has direct flights from several US cities and connections from San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa. Ferries run from La Ceiba on the mainland. Water taxis link West End and West Bay; taxis and buses cover the rest of the island.

Citizens of the UK, US, EU, Canada, Australia and many other countries can visit Honduras visa-free; the CA-4 agreement allows up to 90 days in total across Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua. The US government rates Honduras at Level 3 (reconsider travel) and advises against travel to Gracias a Dios department. Check current advice before you travel.
