Honduras

Tegucigalpa (“silver hill” in the Nahuatl language, founded 1578 as a silver mining camp) is one of the few Latin American capitals never connected to the Pan-American Highway. The Iglesia Los Dolores (1732, the finest Baroque church in Honduras), the Parque Central and the Villa Roy museum in the colonial hilltop city of Comayagüela.

Honduras is the only Central American country with no Pacific coast port and no rail connection to its neighbours. The Pan-American Highway bypasses Honduras entirely — entering Guatemala and continuing to El Salvador, then Nicaragua, without crossing Honduran territory. The country’s road network was historically designed around banana plantation access.

1h flight or 4h drive from Tegucigalpa. Copán (UNESCO World Heritage Site) — the intellectual and artistic capital of the Classic Maya civilisation (600–820 CE), with the finest hieroglyphic stairway in the Americas (2,200 individual glyphs telling the dynastic history of Copán’s 16 kings) and the most refined stone sculpture in the Maya world.

The Hieroglyphic Stairway at Copán is the longest Maya inscription ever found — 2,200 individual carved glyphs covering 63 steps, telling the complete dynastic history from the first king Yax K’uk’ Mo’ (426 CE) to the 13th ruler in 755 CE. It collapsed in an ancient earthquake; the current arrangement reflects a best-effort reconstruction.

The Copán Acropolis tunnel system — 4km of excavated tunnels under the main pyramid reveal four complete earlier temples built inside the existing one, including the perfectly preserved Rosalila Temple (550 CE, painted in red, green and cream, sealed when the outer pyramid was built over it — the finest intact Maya temple interior ever found).

The Rosalila Temple inside Copán’s Structure 16 was sealed in approximately 650 CE when a new pyramid was built around it. The stucco paint is still vivid red after 1,400 years because it was protected from weathering. A full-scale replica is in the Copán museum; the original is accessible on specialised tunnel tours.

45-min flight from San Pedro Sula. Roatán (the largest of the Bay Islands, 60km long) sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the second-largest coral reef system in the world. PADI open-water certification costs US$200–250 — among the cheapest on earth. The West End village for the evening.

The Bay Islands were an English-speaking pirate and British colonial outpost from the 17th century and were ceded to Honduras only in 1859. Most of the indigenous Garifuna and Bay Islander population speaks English as a first language — a linguistic and cultural anomaly within Spanish-speaking Honduras.

A full day on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — wall dives with 40m visibility, whale shark encounters (March–April and June–July), nurse sharks resting on coral shelves, sea turtles and 500+ fish species. The West Bay beach (consistently ranked among the best Caribbean beaches) for the afternoon.

The whale shark aggregation at Gladden Spit, Belize (accessible from Roatán on a longer dive trip) is one of the most reliable whale shark encounters in the world — 50–100 individuals gather to feed on snapper spawn in March–April and June–July. Roatán’s local dive operators run the trip.

45-min flight from Roatán to La Ceiba. Pico Bonito National Park (667km² of Caribbean cloud forest rising from sea level to 2,435m, with 400+ bird species including keel-billed toucans and quetzals) — rafting on the Río Cangrejal (Class III–IV), ziplining and night walks for poison dart frogs.

Pico Bonito is one of the most biologically diverse national parks in Central America per square kilometre — its range from Caribbean coast to cloud forest summit spans six distinct habitat zones. The resplendent quetzal (Guatemala’s national bird, and one of the most striking birds on earth) is found in the upper cloud forest from November to May.

2h30 from La Ceiba. Lago de Yojoa (the only large natural lake in Honduras, 79km² at 635m, surrounded by cloud forest and waterfalls) — Pulhapanzak waterfall (43m, the finest waterfall in Honduras, with a cave behind the curtain), the D&D Brewery (a lakeside craft brewery, the best in Central America) and birdwatching at dawn (400+ species). Fly from San Pedro Sula (SAP).

D&D Brewery on Lago de Yojoa is a Honduran institution — an American-founded craft brewery producing English-style ales and stouts in a lakeside guesthouse setting. The coffee porter (made with Honduran coffee) is the standout. It costs US$3–5 per pint in a country where craft beer barely exists elsewhere.
