São Miguel, the largest and greenest of the Azores, is one of the Atlantic’s most magical islands — a volcanic Eden of crater lakes, hot springs, tea plantations and emerald pastures adrift roughly halfway between Europe and North America. Nicknamed the ‘Green Island’, it packs an astonishing amount of natural drama into a compact space: twin-coloured lakes in ancient calderas, steaming geothermal valleys, waterfalls and a rugged, whale-rich coastline.

The island’s wonders come thick and fast. Peer into the blue-and-green crater lakes of Sete Cidades, hike down to the serene Lagoa do Fogo, and cook a traditional cozido stew in the volcanic soil of Furnas amid bubbling hot springs. Add Europe’s only tea plantations, world-class whale-watching, and the handsome cobbled capital of Ponta Delgada, and São Miguel rewards nature-lovers, hikers and hot-spring bathers alike — all under the mild, changeable weather that keeps it so green.

Top Sights in São Miguel

Sete Cidades

Sete Cidades

The island’s icon — twin crater lakes, one blue and one green, cradled in a vast ancient caldera and best seen from the Vista do Rei viewpoint.

💡 Hike or drive the crater rim early before the clouds roll in.

Lagoa do Fogo

Lagoa do Fogo

A pristine, protected crater lake ringed by steep green slopes in the island’s heart — reached on foot down a scenic trail, with no development in sight.

💡 The hike down to the shore is steep but utterly worth it.

Furnas & Hot Springs

Furnas & Hot Springs

A geothermal valley of steaming fumaroles, bubbling mud pots and hot springs, where locals slow-cook cozido stew in the ground and you can bathe in thermal pools.

💡 Try the earth-cooked cozido and soak in the Poça da Dona Beija springs.

Ponta Delgada

Ponta Delgada

The elegant capital, with its black-and-white cobbled streets, historic churches, the city gates and a lively harbour — the island’s cultural and dining hub.

💡 Base yourself here for restaurants, nightlife and whale-watching trips.

Coast & Whale-Watching

Coast & Whale-Watching

São Miguel’s dramatic cliffs and Atlantic waters host some of the world’s best whale- and dolphin-watching, plus tea plantations and coastal viewpoints.

💡 Boat trips spot resident dolphins and migrating whales year-round.

Eating & Drinking

Azorean food is hearty, fresh and volcanic. The signature dish is cozido das Furnas — a meat-and-vegetable stew slow-cooked for hours in the geothermal earth. The islands’ pastures produce superb beef and cheese (try the famous São Jorge cheese), while the surrounding Atlantic yields excellent fish, limpets (lapas) and tuna. São Miguel even grows Europe’s only tea, at the Gorreana plantation, and its own pineapples in greenhouses. Don’t miss bolo lêvedo (a sweet muffin-like bread), local wines, and the fresh seafood of Ponta Delgada’s restaurants. It is warming, generous, farm-and-sea cooking — perfect after a day’s hiking.

Getting Around

São Miguel has the Azores’ main airport, just outside Ponta Delgada, with flights from Lisbon, mainland Europe and North America. A rental car is by far the best way to explore, as the crater lakes, Furnas and coastal viewpoints are spread across the island and public transport is limited. Roads are good but often winding and misty in the highlands, so allow time. Local buses link the main towns but are infrequent and not ideal for sightseeing. Many visitors join guided tours for Sete Cidades, Furnas and whale-watching. Inter-island flights and ferries connect to the other Azores. Driving is on the right.
