Cambodia's barefoot island escape

On moonless nights, wading into the calm bay water at Koh Touch after 9pm turns the water around you into cold blue-green fire — single-celled dinoflagellates emitting light when disturbed by movement. No tour required: walk from any guesthouse beach into the water, move your hands and feet, and watch the sea light up. The display is at its peak 1–3 nights either side of the new moon, November–April.
💡 Check lunacal.com before booking Koh Rong dates. The display requires a dark sky: a full moon eliminates it entirely. Most guesthouses track lunar conditions and can advise. Bring no phone light to the beach — let your eyes adjust for 10 minutes before entering the water.

Long Beach (5km of white sand on the northwest coast; longtail from Koh Touch beach; $2–3 each way; 20 mins) has the finest sand and the most accessible reef snorkelling on the island. The coral reef at Long Beach’s south end starts in less than 2 metres of water — snorkelling with a rented mask only ($2–3/h) is practical without any diving experience. Water visibility over the reef runs 8–12 metres in dry season.
💡 Hire a kayak from your Koh Touch guesthouse ($5–8/hour) and paddle around the headland to Long Beach (45 mins; do this in the calm morning only). The longtail is the practical option for most visitors: arrange a return time with the driver when they drop you.

Koh Rong Sanloem (separate ferry from Sihanoukville; 1h 15 mins; $15 return) is the quieter island 4km south of Koh Rong. Saracen Bay is a perfectly horseshoe-shaped bay of calm white-sand beach with better snorkelling than Koh Touch and a more relaxed atmosphere. Most experienced island travellers who have visited both prefer Saracen Bay for 2–3 night stays.
💡 Consider Koh Rong Sanloem as your island base if you prefer quieter conditions, better snorkelling, and fewer beach bars. The two islands complement each other for a combined island itinerary: 2 nights Koh Touch for the bioluminescence + 2 nights Saracen Bay for snorkelling and calm.

Koh Rong’s interior is primary tropical rainforest — 78km² of undisturbed jungle with resident gibbons, hornbills, and wild boar. Two cleared trails cross the island north–south (4h round trip to the wild west coast beach; guide essential; from $10 per person from the community forest office at Koh Touch). The trail reaches a deserted beach accessible only by jungle or boat.
💡 Start the trek at 6:30am for the coolest conditions and best wildlife activity. A guide is essential: the trails are unmarked beyond the first kilometre and the undergrowth closes fast. The west-coast beach has good snorkelling and typically no other visitors on weekdays.
Koh Touch beach has a full strip of guesthouse restaurants: fresh fish grills ($5–8), Cambodian amok ($4), pasta and pizza ($5–7), and cocktails from $3. The Nest Bar (hammock bar on the central beach; Beer Lao $1.50; cocktails $4; the social centre of the island in the evening) is the natural gathering point. Fresh coconuts from beach vendors ($1) are the best rehydration. The single convenience store sells basics at island premium prices — bring snacks and sunscreen from Sihanoukville. Early morning: ask your guesthouse to connect you with a local fisherman selling fresh catch directly at the Koh Touch dock (5–6am; whole fish $3–5, grilled on request).
10am speedboat from Sihanoukville ($10; 45 mins). Check in to Koh Touch guesthouse. Afternoon: swim at Koh Touch beach; snorkel mask from guesthouse ($2/h). Sunset drinks at The Nest Bar (Beer Lao $1.50). 9pm: walk from the guesthouse beach into the sea for the bioluminescent plankton display (check lunar calendar first; move your hands in the water; cold blue light surrounds your movements).
7am: hire kayak from guesthouse ($5–8/h) and paddle around the headland to Long Beach (45 mins; calm conditions only; tell your guesthouse first). Snorkel the south-end reef (2m depth; live coral; snorkel mask $3/h from guesthouse). Paddle back by 11am. Afternoon: jungle trek option — arrange guide the night before ($10; community forest office; 4h round trip). Second bioluminescent swim if new moon conditions allow. Next day: 10am speedboat back to Sihanoukville ($10).
Check lunacal.com and book your Koh Rong dates to arrive 1–3 nights before the new moon. A full moon makes the display invisible.
There is no banking infrastructure on Koh Rong. Bring all USD you need: accommodation, food, activities, and the ferry home.
The main Koh Touch beach has been disturbed by boat traffic; snorkelling directly from the beach is poor.
One overnight allows the beach and bioluminescent swim (if timed correctly) but misses Long Beach and the jungle trek.
Koh Rong Sanloem (separate ferry from Sihanoukville; $15 return; 1h 15 mins to Saracen Bay) has a better-preserved reef, calmer water, and a smaller, more relaxed community.
The 45-minute speedboat crosses open Gulf of Thailand water that generates significant swell from May–October.
