Sihanoukville is Cambodia’s main coastal hub and the essential ferry port for the offshore islands — Koh Rong (45 minutes by speedboat) and Koh Rong Sanloem (1 hour 15 minutes). Since 2016 a wave of Chinese casino investment dramatically transformed the city centre, displacing much of the independent backpacker scene. The old beach culture now survives at Otres Beach (8km south) and on the islands themselves.

For independent travellers, Sihanoukville works best as a 1–2 day transit hub: arrive, visit Ream National Park on the morning of arrival, stay at Otres Beach, and ferry to the islands the following morning. The ferry port is excellent and connections run all day.

Top Sights near Sihanoukville

Ream National Park — Mangroves & Wildlife

Ream National Park — Mangroves & Wildlife

Ream National Park (18km east of Sihanoukville; $5 national park entry; guided boat tour $15–20 per person; departs park entrance 8am) is the finest natural area in southern Cambodia — 150km² of mangrove estuaries, primary tropical forest, and undeveloped coastline. The guided boat tour through the Prek Toek Sap estuary passes dolphin pods, hornbill colonies, and a deserted beach on uninhabited Koh Thmei island.

💡 Arrange the Ream boat tour through your Otres Beach guesthouse or take a tuk-tuk directly to the park entrance (18km east of Sihanoukville; $10 return by tuk-tuk). The 8am morning departure has the best bird activity, flattest water, and clearest light. Combine Ream with your island check-in on the same afternoon for an efficient schedule.

Otres Beach & Otres Village

Otres Beach & Otres Village

Otres Beach (8km south of the city centre; Grab tuk-tuk $5 from the ferry port) has retained the character the northern city beaches lost after 2016: 2km of white sand, calm swimmable water, and a community of independent guesthouses, hammock bars, and village restaurants. Otres Village (2 minutes walk from the beach) is the best food and social hub in the Sihanoukville area for independent travellers.

💡 Stay at Otres rather than the city centre unless you have a ferry to catch the same afternoon. The guesthouses are significantly better value; the beach is swimmable; and the 20–25-minute journey to the ferry port by Grab ($5) is manageable for morning departures.

Koh Ta Kiev Day Trips & Island Snorkelling

Koh Ta Kiev Day Trips & Island Snorkelling

Koh Ta Kiev (1.5h by slow boat; $20–30 per person for a combined island day trip including boat, guide, lunch, and snorkel gear) is the most accessible undeveloped island near Sihanoukville — no casino infrastructure, limited electricity, and intact reef snorkelling in less than 3 metres of water. Departures daily from the Sihanoukville Marina. Combined multi-island snorkelling tours also visit the reefs between Koh Ta Kiev and the Koh Rong archipelago.

💡 Book island day trips through Otres Beach guesthouses rather than city centre operators. Otres-based operators use smaller boats, visit better reef spots, and spend more time in the water for the same price. Island conditions are best November–April when the sea is calm.

Serendipity Beach & Sihanoukville Sunset

Serendipity Beach & Sihanoukville Sunset

Serendipity Beach (15 minutes walk from the ferry port) retains a strip of functioning sunset terrace bars from the pre-casino era. The geographic position of Sihanoukville — elevated above a south-facing bay with the offshore islands on the horizon — produces genuinely spectacular silhouette sunsets. Koh Rong and its neighbours are visible 35km offshore, turning dark against the orange sky at 6pm.

💡 Arrive at Serendipity by 5:30pm. A $1.50 Beer Lao on the terrace watching the island silhouettes is the finest free experience in Sihanoukville and unchanged despite everything that has changed around it. The sunset here is as good as it always was.

Eating & Drinking

Eat at Otres Village rather than the city centre. Otres has Cafe Loco (wood-fired pizza; $6–8), a string of guesthouse beach restaurants (fresh seafood grilled to order; $8–15 for a whole fish), and the Saturday Otres Market (local Cambodian food stalls, craft beer, and live music). Beer Lao ($1.50 at any Otres bar) is the standard drink. The city centre restaurant scene is primarily oriented toward Chinese casino visitors, with limited independent dining options for Western travellers. A single exception: Gelato Italiano (Italian-run; near the port; excellent gelato; $2) is worth a detour.

Travel Tips

🚫

Use Sihanoukville as transit to the islands — stay at Otres Beach, not the city centre

From the bus station, take a Grab directly to Otres Beach ($4–5; 8km south; 20 mins).

Buy ferry tickets at the port terminal directly — not from guesthouse touts

Speed Ferry Cambodia and GTVC sell Koh Rong tickets at the port for $10 one-way (speedboat; 45 mins) and $8 (slow boat; 2.5h).

Do the Ream National Park boat tour on your Sihanoukville arrival morning

Ream (18km east; $15–20 per person; 3h; 8am start) fits neatly into a Sihanoukville morning before checking in to Otres or boarding an afternoon ferry to the islands.

🌊

Otres Beach is the only Sihanoukville mainland beach reliably suitable for swimming

The construction north of the city has affected water quality on Ochheuteal and Independence beaches. Otres (south of the development zone) maintains clean, swimmable water.

🚘

Buses run hourly from Phnom Penh — no advance booking needed outside peak season

Virak Buntham, Capitol, and Giant Ibis run Phnom Penh–Sihanoukville services from 6am ($7–12; 4h).

🚗

Shared taxi to Kampot takes 1.5h — the fastest and most flexible connection

The Kampot Express shared taxi ($7; 1.5h; door-to-door) is faster and more comfortable than the local bus for the Sihanoukville–Kampot journey.
