Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges (7km north of La Fortuna on Route 4; USD 28; the 16 hanging bridges (3 suspension bridges up to 100m long at 60m height; 13 fixed bridges) over 3km of primary Arenal rainforest; the spider monkeys, howler monkeys, sloths, poison dart frogs, morpho butterflies, and 250+ bird species visible from the bridge height in the morning; the finest canopy-level rainforest walk accessible without special equipment in Costa Rica) and the Arenal Natura Ecological Park (the guided night tour — USD 35; the most productive wildlife observation at Arenal; the red-eyed tree frogs, the sloth families, the Jesus Christ lizard, and the wolf spider visible with a guide’s torch) are the two finest wildlife experiences at Arenal.

La Fortuna has a practical and enjoyable food scene concentrated on the town’s main street. Rancho La Cascada (the most beloved restaurant in town; the open-air rancho setting; the “casado” plates; USD 8–18; the most popular locals’ restaurant), Soda Viquez (the finest traditional Costa Rican soda counter in La Fortuna; the gallo pinto breakfast; CRC 3,000; the tables under the trees; the local families eating lunch) and the La Fortuna town square restaurants (the more tourist-oriented options; higher prices; good for the convenience and the views of the volcano over coffee). Don Rufino (the most upscale La Fortuna restaurant; the Costa Rican grill; USD 18–35; the finest sit-down dinner in La Fortuna) is the best formal option. Smoothie and juice bars are excellent throughout the main street; the fresh guanabana and mango smoothies are CRC 2,000–3,000 and among the finest in Costa Rica.
Arenal is most cloud-free in the early morning (6–9am). The clearest conditions are December–April. La Fortuna Waterfall viewpoint at dawn has volcano and waterfall in the same frame.
Rent a bicycle in La Fortuna town (USD 10–15/day; flat road to Tabácon is 6km). The public Balneario Tabácon (free; 1km past the resort gate) opens at 8am and is genuinely volcanic hot.
Book adventure activities (white-water rafting, canopy, horseback; USD 40–80) through your hotel or a licensed La Fortuna agency. Avoid touts at the main intersection offering cheaper deals.
Pláya Chollin (free; Route 142; 8km from La Fortuna) is a natural volcanic hot river section with pools in the river rocks. Go at 7–9am before day-trippers arrive from Monteverde.
