Half a kilometre of white sand shelving into knee-deep turquoise, with a walkable sandbar out to Nissi islet — the most famous beach in Cyprus and, on summer mornings before the crowds and beach bars wake, one of the most beautiful. Water sports, DJs and rafts of swimmers arrive by noon in high season.
💡 Come before 9am for the lagoon at its stillest — or in June and September, when the water is warm and the sand isn’t shoulder to shoulder.
The national park east of town ends in white cliffs the sea has carved into caves, arches and blowholes — cliff-jumpers launch from the ledges, kayakers thread the caverns, and the coastal trail links it all to the tiny blue-domed chapel of Agioi Anargyroi. The ‘Bridge of Lovers’ rock arch and the Kamara tou Koraka arch are the classic frames.
💡 Walk or cycle the cape trail at golden hour — and jump only where locals do; swells make some ledges dangerous.
The town’s namesake and its calm centre: a Venetian-era monastery built around a cave shrine of the Virgin, with a marble fountain in its cloister and a 600-year-old sycamore fig shading the gate. It sits improbably a street away from the nightlife quarter — monastery bells by day, basslines by night.
💡 Visit in the early evening when the courtyard cools and the tour buses have gone — then watch the square around it change gears for the night.
Ten minutes north, Protaras curves around Fig Tree Bay — a gentler, family-flavoured twin to Nissi with its own islet to swim to and a boardwalk running the length of the resort. Between the two towns, the Konnos Bay cove hides bright green-blue water backed by pines, a favourite anchorage for the day-cruise catamarans.

Ayia Napa feeds every appetite: full-English breakfasts and burger bars on the strip, but also proper fish tavernas at the harbour where the meze runs to grilled octopus, sea bream and village halloumi. Eat where the boats dock for the freshest catch, and time dinner for sunset over the marina’s superyachts. Out in the villages — Liopetri, Xylofagou — the potato is king (the red soil grows Cyprus’s famous spuds) and the tavernas roast souvla the old way. For the sweet finish: loukoumades from the kiosks by the square, best eaten hot at midnight between bars.
Beat the beach clubs to Nissi — wade the sandbar to the islet while the lagoon is glass — then a harbour-side coffee as the day boats load up.
Kayak or boat through the sea caves, or walk the cape trail past the arches to the little white chapel. Picnic under the junipers, or lunch back at the harbour tavernas.
Swim Konnos Bay’s green-blue cove, then idle up to Fig Tree Bay for the softest sand of the day and a boardwalk ice cream in Protaras.
Sunset drink above the marina, a quiet turn through the monastery cloister as the lights come on — then dinner, and as much or as little of the famous nightlife as you came for.
July–August is the full party experience; May–June and September–October offer the same sea with half the people and prices — pick your Ayia Napa.
The 101/102 coastal bus links Ayia Napa, Konnos and Protaras every 15–30 minutes in season — easier than parking at the popular coves.
Cape Greco’s ledges claim injuries every summer — check depth, watch the swell, and skip jumps entirely on rough days.
The red-soil villages behind the coast — windmills, potato fields, old churches — are a 15-minute drive and a different century.
Bars on the main square charge resort prices — the harbour and back streets pour the same drinks for a third less.
The east coast is the sunniest corner of Cyprus — the sandbar reflects light from below too; reapply sunscreen after every swim.
