No kings were buried here — but the Ptolemaic grandees of the 3rd century BC cut tombs so palatial into the coastal rock that the name stuck. Doric columns ring sunken courtyards open to the sky, carved entirely from the living stone, with the sea crashing just beyond. Wandering the site feels like discovering a lost city.

Petra tou Romiou — the sea stack where the goddess of love rose from the foam — anchors one of the Mediterranean’s most photographed shorelines. The pebble beach curves beneath white cliffs, the water shifts through impossible blues, and legend promises eternal youth to anyone who swims a circle around the rock.

The Akamas Peninsula is Cyprus before development — a roadless national park of juniper hills, the Avakas Gorge slot canyon and the Blue Lagoon’s swimming-pool water near Cape Arnaoutis. Boats run from Latchi harbour; jeeps and hikers take the Aphrodite Trail above the bay where the goddess is said to have bathed.

Paphos eating splits between the harbour — where tavernas grill the day’s catch beside the castle — and Ktima, the upper old town, where the meze houses the locals prefer hide in restored stone mansions. Save one lunch for Latchi’s harbour, famous for seafood after an Akamas morning, and one evening for loukoumades under the old town’s fairy lights.

Take the coast road north to the Tombs of the Kings and descend into the rock-cut courtyards. Lunch afterwards in Ktima’s old town — meze in a stone mansion, away from the seafront prices.
Drive toward the Akamas: the Avakas Gorge narrows if you want to walk, or Latchi harbour and a swim in the Blue Lagoon’s unreal turquoise if you’d rather float.
Loop back along the coast to Aphrodite’s Rock for the day’s last light on the sea stack — legend says a sunset swim around it grants eternal youth. Dinner at the harbour rounds off the myth.
