The heart of the park is a dramatic glacial gorge where the Ala-Archa river tumbles between steep forested slopes and jagged peaks. A trail follows the valley from the entrance deep into the mountains.

A popular half-day hike climbs steeply from the valley floor to the Ak-Sai waterfall, gaining fast altitude for sweeping views back down the gorge and toward the high peaks.
