Thousands of large stone jars are scattered across the hills around Phonsavan in Xieng Khouang province. Most date from the Iron Age and are thought to have been used in funeral practices. Fifteen of the sites became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019.

The plateau was heavily bombed during the Vietnam War era, and unexploded ordnance (UXO) remains a danger. Visitors should stay on marked paths at sites that have been cleared.
