Baltic Port and the Curonian Spit Gateway
The Curonian Spit (Kuronų nerija; UNESCO World Heritage 2000; a 98km sand and forest peninsula between the Curonian Lagoon and the Baltic Sea; Lithuanian northern half is 50km; Russian southern half is Kaliningrad territory; the highest coastal dunes in Europe — Parnidis Dune at 52m above the lagoon near Nida — a UNESCO-protected shifting dune landscape) is the finest natural landscape in Lithuania. The Lithuanian Curonian Spit National Park (Nida is the main village; 100km south of Klaipėda by bus from the Smiltyė ferry) covers the forest trails, dune viewpoints, and the Thomas Mann House (the German Nobel laureate summered here 1930–1932).
💡 Take the Klaipėda Smiltyė ferry (5 minutes; €1; runs all night; from the Old Ferry Terminal at the Old Town waterfront) to the Curonian Spit. From Smiltyė, bus 1 runs the length of the spit to Nida (1h; €4). The Parnidis Dune Viewpoint (the sundial on the highest dune near Nida; the view over the lagoon and the Baltic Sea simultaneously; the most extraordinary natural viewpoint in Lithuania) is the single finest landscape experience in Lithuania.
Klaipėda Old Town (the former German Memel; the half-timbered Fachwerk district north of the Dane River; the Theatre Square — the bronze Annchen von Tharau statue — a 17th-century German folk poem heroine; and the imposing 1857 Drama Theatre — a neoclassical building with historical significance as the stage from which Hitler announced Memel’s annexation to Germany in March 1939) is the most historically layered small city centre in Lithuania. The German heritage (the Memel German settlement of 1252; the distinct Central European streetscape; the half-timbered houses) makes Klaipėda’s Old Town unlike any other Lithuanian city.
💡 Walk the Old Town circuit (Theatre Square; the Fachwerk lanes to the north; the Blacksmith Museum — €3; the finest ironwork collection in Lithuania; the Sculpture Park along the river; the Castle Museum ruins; 2h; free externally) in the morning before the day visitors from the Curonian Spit arrive. The Theatre Square at 7am (the Annchen statue; the drama theatre facade; no tourists) is the finest early morning in Klaipėda.
The Klaipėda Sculpture Park (Dangis Park; along the north bank of the Danė River; free; the largest open-air sculpture collection in Lithuania; works by Lithuanian and international sculptors installed from 1976 onwards; the most characterful public art promenade in the Baltic States) runs from the Old Town bridge to the harbour entrance — 1.5km of river promenade with over 30 sculptures. The waterfront (the old harbour cranes; the sailing club; the Curonian Lagoon ferries departing from the southern pier) is the finest evening walk in Klaipėda.
💡 The Sculpture Park is best in the evening (5–8pm in summer; the river reflects the Old Town facades; the sculptures catch the golden light; the sailors and harbour traffic on the water; the most atmospheric walk in Klaipėda). The Curonian Lagoon sunset (the lagoon is visible from the ferry dock south of the city; the calm lagoon water reflects an extraordinary Baltic sunset in July–August) is the finest single outdoor moment in Klaipėda.
Nida (100km from Klaipėda by bus along the spit; the main town of the Lithuanian Curonian Spit; population 1,000 permanent; 50,000 summer visitors; the most beautiful village setting in Lithuania — lagoon fishing cottages with amber-decorated weathervanes; the Parnidis Dune directly above; the Thomas Mann House at Skruzdynės 17; €4; the Nobel laureate’s summer house 1930–1932; the lagoon harbour with amber and fish smoked over alder wood) is the finest destination on the Curonian Spit.
💡 Take the Klaipėda–Smiltyė ferry (€1; 5 mins) and bus 1 to Nida (1h; €4; buses hourly in summer). In Nida: rent a bicycle (any of the cottages near the bus stop; €5–10/h) and cycle to the Parnidis Dune (3km; the sundial; the 52m dune; the lagoon-and-sea panorama). Thomas Mann House (30 mins; €4). Lagoon harbourside smoked fish (the best smoked eel in Lithuania; €5–8 from any fisherman’s stall). Return bus to Klaipėda by 7pm.
Klaipėda’s food scene combines Lithuanian, German, and Baltic coastal influences. Memelis Brewery (Kuršių 2; the most celebrated brewpub in Klaipėda; Lithuanian craft beer brewed on-site; pub food; €10–20; the finest beer selection in western Lithuania) is the essential evening stop. Ricų kramą (the finest restaurant in Klaipėda; creative Lithuanian-Baltic cuisine; €20–40) is the best dinner option. The Klaipėda Old Town cafes and market (the Saturday market near Theatre Square; fresh Lithuanian produce; smoked fish; amber; the finest Saturday morning atmosphere in western Lithuania) fill the morning. In Nida: smoked eel and lagoon fish from the harbourside fishermen (€5–8 per portion; the most distinctively Lithuanian coastal food).
10am: arrive Klaipėda by bus (3h from Vilnius). Old Town walk (Theatre Square; Annchen statue; Fachwerk lanes; Blacksmith Museum €3; 1.5h). Lunch at Old Town cafe (€10–15). Sculpture Park promenade (Danė River; 30+ sculptures; 1h; free). Memelis Brewery evening (Lithuanian craft beer; pub food; €15–20).
8:30am: Smiltyė ferry (€1; 5 mins). Bus 1 to Nida (1h; €4). Bicycle rental (€10). Thomas Mann House (€4; 30 mins). Lagoon harbourside smoked fish lunch (€7). Cycle to Parnidis Dune (3km; 15 mins; climb to sundial; 45 mins at the top). Return to Nida 5pm. Amber shopping (Nida main street). Bus back to Smiltyė (1h). Ferry to Klaipėda. Return bus to Vilnius 8pm or overnight.
The Curonian Spit (ferry from Klaipedå Old Town harbour; €1.50; 15 minutes; then bus to Nida; 50km; 1 hour) is best visited on the same day as Klaipedå. Allow the full day for the dunes and lagoon.
The Parnidis Dune (3km cycle or 45-minute walk from Nida village; the 52m dune above the Curonian Lagoon; sunset view west over the lagoon) is the finest natural sight in Lithuania. Reach it by bicycle.
Klaipedå from Vilnius (Lux Express; 3 hours; €12–18; multiple daily departures) is the most practical Lithuanian coast connection. Two nights covers the city and a full Curonian Spit day.
Nida bicycle rental (any cottage near the bus stop; €5–10/hour; €15–25/day; the path from Nida to the Parnidis Dune is 3km; the lagoon cycle path north to Juodkranté is 20km) is the best Nida activity.
The Curonian Spit has good 4G in Nida village and Smiltyė but unreliable signal on the forest trails and dune sections between.
The Nida lagoon fishermen (wooden boats; smoking racks from the main road; smoked eel and perch sold directly; €6–12 per piece; Nida harbour from 5pm when boats return with the catch) is unmissable.
