Echternach is the oldest town in Luxembourg, and it wears its history gracefully. Founded around a great Benedictine abbey in the 7th century by the English monk Saint Willibrord, it grew into one of the most important religious centres of medieval Europe, and its basilica still draws pilgrims — most famously for the Whit Tuesday dancing procession, a UNESCO-listed tradition found nowhere else on earth.

Set on the river Sauer where Luxembourg meets Germany, the town pairs its abbey and pretty medieval square with an easygoing outdoors appeal. Just outside lies a lovely lake ringed by walking and cycling paths and busy in summer with paddleboarders, while the surrounding ‘Mullerthal’ — Luxembourg’s ‘Little Switzerland’ — is a wonderland of forest trails, mossy rock formations and gorges. Reached free from the capital, Echternach is a rewarding blend of deep history and gentle nature.

The Abbey & Basilica

The Abbey & Basilica

The great Benedictine abbey founded by Saint Willibrord, its basilica holding the saint’s tomb — the heart of the town for over 1,300 years and still a place of pilgrimage.

💡 Visit the crypt and the abbey museum for the town’s remarkable story.

Echternach Lake

Echternach Lake

A tranquil lake just outside town, ringed by a flat walking and cycling path — the locals’ favourite spot for a stroll, a swim or a lakeside coffee.

💡 The loop path is an easy, pretty walk of about an hour.

Watersports on the Lake

Watersports on the Lake

In summer the lake fills with paddleboarders, pedalos and swimmers — a relaxed, family-friendly scene with rentals right on the shore.

💡 Rent a paddleboard on a warm afternoon for the best of the lake.

The Mullerthal Trail

The Mullerthal Trail

Echternach is the gateway to the Mullerthal, ‘Little Switzerland’ — a magical region of forest paths, dramatic sandstone rock formations and cool gorges.

💡 Even a short section of the trail rewards you with the famous rock scenery.

The Old Town & Square

The Old Town & Square

Beyond the abbey, Echternach’s medieval market square, old houses and remnants of its town walls make for a lovely wander.

💡 The main square is the place for a drink after the abbey.

Eating & Drinking

Echternach’s restaurants and cafes cluster around the market square and the abbey, serving Luxembourg-German border cooking: Ardenner ham, river fish, game in autumn, potato dishes and the national judd mat gaardebounen, alongside German-influenced plates given the town sits right on the frontier. Being on the Sauer and Moselle’s doorstep, the local white wines and Crémant are excellent and inexpensive. In summer, lakeside kiosks and terraces are the place to be, and the square’s cafes make a fine spot to rest tired legs after the Mullerthal trails. Simple, good-value and pleasant.

Getting Around

Echternach lies about 30km northeast of Luxembourg City on the German border, and is reached — like all of the country — by free public transport: a direct free bus runs from the capital in around 45 minutes to an hour. The town centre is compact and walked easily on foot, and the lake is a short walk or free bus hop away. For the Mullerthal, the trails start near town and are best explored on foot; renting a bike is a good way to cover the lake loop and beyond. Drivers will find parking near the abbey and lake.
