Vianden’s handful of restaurants and cafes serve hearty Luxembourg-Ardennes cooking in a lovely riverside setting. It is a small town, so choices are limited and it pays to book on summer weekends, but the quality is good and the setting hard to beat.
Vianden is about 40km north of Luxembourg City, and — like everywhere in the country — reached by free public transport: take a free train towards Ettelbrück or Diekirch and a connecting free bus into Vianden, roughly an hour in total. The town itself is small and walked on foot, though the streets are steep; a chairlift (small fee) carries you above the valley for the view, and it is a short but stiff climb up to the castle. Drivers will find car parks by the river. For the Ardennes trails, walking boots are all you need.
