Morondava eats well from the sea, with grilled fish, prawns, crab and calamari served simply with rice or coconut sauce at beachside restaurants. A few French-run spots do good steak and crepes, and cold THB beer or fresh mango juice rounds off a hot day. Sunset seafood by the beach after the baobabs is the classic Morondava evening.
Relax on the beach by day, then head out for sunset at the Avenue of the Baobabs and the nearby Lovers Baobabs, staying for the afterglow.
Drive to Kirindy Forest for lemurs, fossa and a night walk, catching sunrise at the avenue on the way there or back.
The avenue is magical at both ends of the day; a private car lets you catch the light without the tour crowds.
Roads to Kirindy and Belo sur Mer are rough; a sturdy vehicle and local driver are essential.
