Practical Tips for Évora

🏹

Cromeleque dos Almendres: bring a map

Portugal’s largest megalithic site (95 standing stones; 6000 BCE) is 15km out on unmarked rural tracks. Download the offline map before driving.

Chapel of Bones: go early

The 16th-century chapel lined with 5,000 human bones opens at 9am. Arrive then — tour groups arrive at 10am and it becomes packed.

Monsaraz: the most perfectly preserved hilltop village in Portugal

The hilltop walled village 50km east is Portugal’s finest: perfectly preserved, three restaurants, three guesthouses. Go for sunset.

🌠

Alqueva Dark Sky Reserve: stargazing

The reservoir is Europe’s largest dark-sky reserve. One night outside Évora delivers genuinely extraordinary stargazing with zero light pollution.

🌝

Açorda at Quarta-Feira: arrive early

The Alentejo bread-and-coriander soup at Quarta-Feira restaurant is Évora’s finest dish. Arrive before 1pm — it sells out.

🍷

Alentejo wine: buy at the quinta, not the supermarket

Buy directly at Herdade do Esporão or Herdade dos Grous (both within 45 minutes). Cellar-door prices are 40–60% below Lisbon retail.
