For everyday eating: Cantina 32 (Rua das Flores 32; the best contemporary tasca in Porto; no reservations — queue or arrive at 12pm for lunch, 7:30pm for dinner), the Mercado do Bolhão (the renovated 19th-century iron market; open since 1914; the finest fresh produce market in northern Portugal — fully restored and reopened in 2022 after 11 years of closure), and the Casa Guedes (the finest bifanas in Porto; Praça dos Poveiros). Uber is available and affordable (€5–12 for most city journeys; useful for the steep hills of Bonfim and Cedofeita).

Travel Tips

🍷

Port wine 101: tawny vs ruby

Tawny (aged in oak, nutty, serve chilled) vs ruby (fruity, serve at room temperature). Graham’s or Ramos Pinto for the cellar tour.

📚

Livraria Lello: book timed entry in advance

Book timed entry online (€8, redeemable against a book purchase). Walk-up queues run 90 minutes in summer.

🌡

Douro Valley by train: one of Europe’s great rail journeys

The Linha do Douro from Porto Campanhã to Pinhão takes 2.5 hours following the river gorge — one of Europe’s finest rail journeys.

November to March: Porto is beautiful and empty

Hotel rates halve, the azulejo churches are empty, and the light on the Douro is exceptional. Bring a waterproof jacket.

🏀

Francesinha: the Porto sandwich, done properly

Order it at Café Santiago (Rua Passos Manuel 226): bread, cured meats, melted cheese, beer-and-tomato sauce. Eat it with chips.

📷

São Bento at 7am: the tiles with no one there

The station’s 20,000-tile azulejo panels glow at dawn with no tourists. Arrive by 7:30am before the day trains start.
