Eating & Drinking

Faro dining centres on the traditional Algarve seafood and southern Portuguese cuisine: cataplana de marisco (the best Algarve copper-clam pot seafood stew with clams, prawns, and chouriço sausage in any accessible Faro restaurant; from €18 per person at any Faro Cidade Velha or marina seafood restaurant); the grilled fresh fish (the best Algarve grilled dourada (gilded bream) or robalo (sea bass) with Alentejo olive oil from any Faro waterfront restaurant; from €14 per main); amêijoas à Bulhão Pato (the best Algarve steamed clams with garlic, white wine, and coriander from any Faro tasca; from €10 per plate); and the carob molasses and fig and almond cake (the best Algarve dessert).

The Faro Mercado Municipal (Largo da Pé, daily from 7am; the fresh fish hall is the finest in the Algarve) and the Tasca do Único (Rua Insêndios 26; the most consistently praised tasca in Faro old town; the cataplana and the freshly grilled fish; arrive at noon for lunch) are the two most important food addresses. Avoid the tourist restaurants along the marina promenade — they charge resort prices for indifferent food.

Getting Around

Faro’s old town and the town centre are entirely walkable (15 min from the train station to the Cidade Velha; 5 min from the bus terminal to the ferry pier). The Ria Formosa ferries (from the pier adjacent to the Faro Marina; schedules and ticket prices at float at the pier office; Ilha Deserta: 30 min €10 return, Ilha da Culatra: 45 min €5 return, Ilha de Faro: 10 min €3 return) are the primary tourist transport. For the western Algarve, a rental car from Faro Airport is the most practical option; trains connect Faro to Lagos (1h 15 min) and Tavira (30 min). Uber is available in Faro for city journeys (€5–10).

Travel Tips

🏴

Visit Tavira instead of Albufeira

Tavira is 30 minutes east by train (€3.35): white-cube houses, Roman bridge, unspoiled beaches. Albufeira is package tourism. Go to Tavira.

🌹

Ria Formosa birdwatching: March–April and October

March–April for migrating waders; October for flamingos staging before Africa. The Ria Formosa ferry from Faro harbour costs €2.50.

🐠

Ilha Deserta on a weekday in May or September

The uninhabited barrier island ferry runs May–September. On a weekday in shoulder season: kilometre-long empty beach, one restaurant.

📷

Sé Cathedral bell tower: the finest view in the Algarve

Climb the 12th-century bell tower (€2) for the finest Algarve roofscape: terracotta tiles, Roman walls, Ria Formosa beyond.

🏝

Drive to Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente

90 minutes west to Cabo de São Vicente: the southwestern tip of continental Europe. Best at sunset. Fortaleza de Sagres costs €3.

🍢

Ria Formosa clams: eat them in Faro, not the resort towns

Ameijoas à Bulhão Pato (clams in garlic and white wine) cost half the resort-town price at any Faro taberna. Eat them here.
