The Garden Route is the 300km coastal stretch of the Southern Cape between Mossel Bay and the Storms River — the finest coastal drive in South Africa, passing through forest towns, lagoon systems, the Tsitsikamma rainforest, and the most spectacular bungee jump on earth (the Bloukrans Bridge; 216m; the world’s highest commercial bungee). The drive is best done over 4–7 days stopping at the key towns.

Knysna’s twin sandstone cliffs (the Heads) frame the lagoon entrance where the lagoon meets the Indian Ocean — the finest single view on the Garden Route. The Knysna oyster (cultivated in the lagoon; best eaten at the Knysna Quays from R25 each) is the finest bivalve in South Africa. The Tsitsikamma Storms River suspension bridge is the longest suspension footbridge over a gorge in South Africa.

Knysna Lagoon & the Heads

Knysna Lagoon is the finest natural feature on the Garden Route — the 17km² tidal lagoon, fringed by indigenous forest and oyster farms, opens to the Indian Ocean through the Heads (two sandstone cliffs 100m high and 80m apart). The Featherbed Nature Reserve ferry crosses the lagoon to the western Head for the limestone caves and coastal vegetation.

💡 Knysna Heads at dawn (the twin sandstone cliffs at the lagoon mouth; the Featherbed ferry at 9am; R795) turns the cliffs amber in the early light — the most dramatic natural structure on the Garden Route.

Tsitsikamma & Bloukrans Bungee

The Tsitsikamma (100km of indigenous coastal forest, gorges, and cold river mouths) includes the Bloukrans Bridge (216m; the highest commercial bungee jump in the world) and the Storms River suspension bridge (77m above the river gorge). The Otter Trail (a 5-day coastal hiking trail) is the finest multi-day walk in South Africa.

💡 Bloukrans bungee (R1,850; 216m; the highest commercial bungee in the world; between Storms River and Nature’s Valley) is the finest adrenaline experience in South Africa. The catwalk walk (R250) gives the gorge view without the jump.

Wilderness Lakes & the Western Garden Route

The Wilderness Lakes (the Serpentine, Langvlei, Rondevlei, Swartvlei, and Groenvlei lagoons interconnected by the Touw River) form the finest paddling and birdwatching circuit in the Western Cape. The Wilderness town beachfront, where the Touw River mouth opens onto a sheltered Indian Ocean beach, is the finest village beach on the Garden Route.

💡 Knysna oysters at the Quays (R25–35 each; freshly shucked from the lagoon) with a glass of Elgin Sauvignon Blanc and the view of the Heads is the finest meal on the Garden Route.

Mossel Bay & Plettenberg Bay

Mossel Bay (the Garden Route’s western gateway; the Bartholomew Dias Museum; the Post Office Tree where sailors left messages in a boot in 1500 AD) and Plettenberg Bay (the finest beaches on the Garden Route; the dolphin boat trips; the whale migration from June to November) frame the 300km coastal journey of the Garden Route.

💡 Robberg Nature Reserve (R200; 9km from Plettenberg Bay; the 3h peninsula circuit) has 15,000+ Cape fur seals at the Point — the finest coastal wildlife walking in the Western Cape.

Eating & Drinking on the Garden Route

The Garden Route food culture centres on fresh South African seafood and Cape wine: the Knysna oyster (R 20–40 each at the Boatshed, the Knysna Oyster Company, and every Garden Route seafood restaurant; the July Oyster Festival), the grilled Cape snoek (the most specifically Cape fish; the whole snoek on the braai with apricot jam basting; R 80–180 pp at any Knysna or Wilderness restaurant), the line fish of the day (the kabeljou, the steenbras, the yellowtail), and the abalone (the perlemoen; legally available from licensed restaurants at R 150–300 per portion in season). The Robertson and Klein Karoo wine estates (2h inland from Knysna via the R62; the Boplaas port at Calitzdorp; the Barrydale Chenin Blanc; R 50–100 per tasting flight at 4–6 estates) are the wine complement to the seafood. The braai (the South African barbecue; the self-catering option at every Garden Route camping and chalet facility; the boerewors from the local butcher; the most sociable Garden Route evening) is the most practical and the most typically South African accommodation dinner.

Getting Around the Garden Route

The rental car (from George Airport; Avis, Budget and Hertz at the terminal; R 400–800/day; petrol stations at every major town; a standard compact car covers all the tar roads and gravel side roads adequate for the main sites; book 4–8 weeks ahead in Dec–Jan peak) is the only transport that gives the flexibility to stop at the Bloukrans Bridge catwalk, the Knysna Heads western viewpoint, the Tsitsikamma gorge suspension bridge and the Robberg Peninsula hike at your own pace. The Baz Bus (Cape Town to Port Elizabeth; R 800–1,800 one way; the hop-on hop-off backpacker bus; stops at all major Garden Route hostels; the most affordable non-car alternative) covers the main towns but requires you to coordinate the overnight stops with the hostel schedule. Driving the N2: the George–Knysna section (80km; the Outeniqua Pass, the Kaaimans viaduct, the forest approaching Knysna; 1.5h with one stop) is the most scenic road drive in this guide.
