Big Five safaris and rainbow nation culture
Table Mountain (the cable car or 2h hike to the flat-topped summit), the V&A Waterfront and Camps Bay Beach with 12 Apostles mountains behind it. The most beautiful city in Africa.
A 20,000km² national park adjacent to private game reserves: the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, rhino) in their natural habitat. Self-drive safaris are possible.
Stellenbosch’s 17th-century Cape Dutch architecture among oak trees, and Franschhoek’s (French Huguenot settlers’ valley) wine tram: the finest South African wine within 60km of Cape Town.
The 300km Garden Route: the Tsitsikamma’s Storms River Mouth suspension bridge, the Knysna Lagoon oysters, the Plettenberg Bay beaches and the Oudtshoorn ostrich farms.
Soweto’s Vilakazi Street (the only street where two Nobel Peace Prize winners lived: Mandela and Tutu), the Hector Pieterson Museum (1976 Soweto Uprising) and the Apartheid Museum.
The Amphitheatre’s 5km basalt wall (800m high, Tugela Falls dropping over it) and the 3,000+ San Bushmen rock art sites in a mountain range accessible from Johannesburg or Durban.
Nelson Mandela’s prison for 18 years: the tour is led by former prisoners. The island is 12 minutes by ferry from the V&A Waterfront.
400+ elephants in a malaria-free park near Port Elizabeth: the densest elephant population of any national park in the world.
The South African barbecue: a social ritual using only wood or charcoal (never gas), with boerewors (coiled spiced sausage), lamb chops, pork ribs and sosaties (skewered marinated meat).
Spiced minced meat baked with an egg custard topping: a Cape Malay dish of Malay slave origin, infused with curry, apricot jam and raisins. The national dish.
A hollowed-out quarter loaf of white bread filled with curry: originated in Durban’s Indian community. Eaten without cutlery. The most distinctive South African street food.
Air-dried cured meat (beef, game) with salt, pepper and coriander. Not jerky: drier, with a different curing process. Available at every petrol station in South Africa.
Pinotage (a South African cross of Cinsaut and Pinot Noir) and Chenin Blanc (called Steen locally) are the two great indigenous South African varieties.
Castle Lager is the national beer. Cape Town’s craft beer scene (Devil’s Peak, Jack Black, Darling Brew) is among the most innovative in Africa.
Maize porridge (pap) with boerewors and tomato-onion gravy: the most widely eaten dish in South Africa across all cultures.
A sweet, spongy baked dessert soaked in a cream and apricot jam sauce: the definitive South African dessert, eaten warm with custard.
Johannesburg O.R. Tambo (JNB) is the main long-haul hub; Cape Town (CPT) and Durban (DUR) also receive direct international flights. South African Airways, Kulula and FlySafair serve domestic routes. For trip planning, see the official South Africa tourism portal.
💡 South African Airways and British Airways both fly Heathrow direct to Johannesburg in ~11 hours. Cape Town direct from Heathrow is also available (11h30) — useful for Western Cape itineraries.
💡 Delta’s Atlanta–Johannesburg direct (16h) is the only non-stop service from North America to South Africa — convenient for US East Coast and connecting travellers.
💡 FlySafair is South Africa’s most reliable budget carrier — significantly cheaper than SAA on domestic routes when booked ahead. Book at flysafair.co.za.
💡 Hire a car in Cape Town for the Peninsula, Winelands and Garden Route — the scenery is best experienced at your own pace. Uber is safe and cheap within cities. Don’t drive at night in unfamiliar areas.
South Africa has two main travel windows depending on region. Cape Town and the Western Cape are best October–April (dry, warm Mediterranean climate). The Kruger and wildlife reserves are best May–September (dry winter: vegetation thins and animals congregate at waterholes). The Garden Route is good year-round.
South Africa is good value for foreign visitors — the rand is weak against major currencies, and the quality of accommodation, food and safari experiences at all price points is high.
A bunny chow — a hollowed-out quarter loaf of white bread filled with curry (Durban Indian origin) — costs ZAR 40–80. One of South Africa’s most distinctive dishes.
Lunch at a Stellenbosch or Franschhoek wine estate — three courses with a wine pairing — costs ZAR 500–900pp (≈£20–37). Often the best-value fine dining experience in South Africa.
The Sabi Sands Game Reserve (bordering Kruger) is where the most sought-after private lodges operate — Londolozi, MalaMala, Singita Boulders. From $1,500/night per person fully inclusive (all meals, two game drives daily).
Cape Town for three days, the Winelands for one, the Garden Route for one, and the Kruger National Park to finish. This plan covers South Africa’s essential experiences.
Table Mountain (1,086m, flat-topped sandstone plateau above the city) by cable car or hike — the view over Cape Town, the Atlantic and the Cape Peninsula is one of the great urban views on earth. The V&A Waterfront for dinner, with the mountain lit behind it.
💡 Book the Table Mountain cable car online at tablemountain.net — the cable car closes in high wind and on cloudy days. Check the forecast and book a morning slot.
Robben Island (the prison where Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years — the cell, the lime quarry, guided by former political prisoners). Afternoon: the Cape Peninsula drive south — Chapman’s Peak, Cape Point, Boulders Beach penguin colony (African penguins).
💡 The Boulders Beach African penguin colony (2,500 birds nesting in the coastal vegetation) is one of the most accessible wildlife encounters in the country. The penguins are entirely unbothered by humans at close range.
Bo-Kaap — the Malay Quarter, brightly coloured cottages and the oldest mosque in South Africa. The District Six Museum (the history of forced removals under apartheid — one of the most important museums in the country). An introduction tasting at a Cape Town wine bar.
💡 The District Six Museum is small, community-run and deeply affecting — the history of 60,000 people forcibly removed from a mixed-race neighbourhood under the Group Areas Act is told through maps, photographs and personal objects.
45 minutes from Cape Town. Stellenbosch is South Africa’s wine capital — Cape Dutch gabled estates along oak-lined roads. Franschhoek (“French Corner”) was settled by French Huguenot refugees in 1688 — now has the most concentrated restaurant scene in the country.
💡 Stellenbosch has over 150 wine estates within easy distance — rent bikes to move between them, or join a wine tasting bus. Meerlust, Rust en Vrede and Kanonkop for serious reds.
Hermanus (the best land-based whale watching in the world, August–November). The Boulders at De Kelders. Continue to the Knysna Lagoon — the lagoon with its twin sandstone heads, the Knysna Heads, is one of the most dramatic coastal landscapes in South Africa.
💡 Hermanus’s Walker Bay is the calving ground for Southern Right whales (June–November). The town has a whale crier (a man who walks the cliff paths blowing a kelp horn when whales are spotted) — entirely genuine.
1h30 flight from George (GRG) or Cape Town to Hoedspruit (HDS) or Nelspruit (MQP). The Kruger National Park is one of the world’s great wildlife reserves — 19,485km², home to all of the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino, leopard). Two game drives per day.
💡 The Kruger is accessible as a self-drive (book rest camps well ahead at sanparks.org) or from private reserves on the western border (Sabi Sands, Thornybush) for more exclusive Big Five access.
Dawn game drive (5:30am) for the best wildlife activity — big cats are most active in the first two hours after dawn. Fly back to Johannesburg (O.R. Tambo, JNB) for international connections.
💡 The southern Kruger (Skukuza, Satara, Berg-en-Dal camps) has the highest density of big cats. Self-drive visitors who move slowly and stop at waterholes in winter (June–August) consistently see all of the Big Five within 2–3 days.
Uber and Bolt both work in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Cape Town and Johannesburg require standard big-city awareness: no phones visible on the street, no walking at night in unfamiliar areas.
Johannesburg to Cape Town: 2h flight. Kulula, FlySafair and Airlink serve all domestic routes.
The southern camps (Skukuza, Lower Sabie) have good road networks for self-drive. Dawn and dusk are the best game times.
Kruger and the Limpopo region are malaria areas. Take prophylaxis and use DEET.
The rainbow nation’s warmth comes from multiple directions simultaneously.
A restaurant meal: ZAR 150-300 (EUR 8-16). A safari lodge: ZAR 2,000-8,000/night.
