The most distinctive eating experience is at Doi Mae Salong (90km northwest): the morning market serves Yunnanese noodle soup and highland tea that is different from anything available in the rest of Thailand. The Salema Hilltop Tea House above the Mae Salong village (open daily; the panoramic view plus Yunnanese pu-erh tea) is worth the drive alone. The Hall of Opium museum café (the museum is the finest in northern Thailand) serves Mekong River fish and northern Thai dishes overlooking the three-country junction.
The city centre is walkable (the night market, the Clock Tower, the Oub Kham Museum and the Blue Temple are all within 5km). Songthaews circulate the city (฿20–40 for most city journeys) and can be chartered for the day to reach the White Temple and Golden Triangle (฿800–1,200 for a chartered songthaew covering both sites). A rental car (฿800–1,200/day; available from any city car rental shop) is the most flexible option for the White Temple, Blue Temple, Black House, Golden Triangle and Doi Mae Salong in a single day. Grab has very limited coverage in Chiang Rai; do not rely on it outside the city centre.
Nov–Feb is the ideal season: cool and dry (15–28°C in the day; cool evenings down to 10–12°C in December). The highland landscapes are at their clearest and the White Temple most photogenic without monsoon humidity. Mar–May is the burning season with poor air quality. Jun–Oct is green and lush but wet.
Chiang Rai is the most affordable major destination in northern Thailand: cheaper than Chiang Mai for accommodation, food and transport. The main one-off costs are the Hall of Opium (฿400) and the White Temple (฿100). Per person per day.
Chiang Rai is one of the cheapest cities in Thailand. Guesthouse accommodation in the city centre starts at ฿200/night. The night market food is excellent and cheap (<฿80/dish).
Renting a car (฿800–1,200/day) for the White Temple, Black House, Golden Triangle and Doi Mae Salong in a 2-day circuit is the most efficient and cost-effective way to see all four sites.

Wat Rong Khun opens at 8am. The all-white exterior and glass mosaic are most photogenic in the first hour before tour buses from Chiang Mai arrive at 9:30am.
Baan Dam Museum (the Black House; 80 THB; closed Monday) is Chiang Rai’s dark counterpart to the White Temple — black lacquered structures filled with skins, bones, and taxidermy.
The Hall of Opium (500 THB; Golden Triangle; 9am–4pm; closed Monday) is a serious 10-gallery museum documenting the complete history of the opium trade in the Golden Triangle.
Doi Mae Salong (1,200m; 90 min north) is a Chinese Yunnan tea village in mountain mist. The morning tea gardens, dawn market, and Myanmar views are extraordinary. Stay one night.

Chiang Saen (60km north; bus 120 THB; Mekong riverside) is a 7th-century walled city with ruins of 66 temples. The town overlooks the Mekong at the Thai-Myanmar-Laos border.
