Krabi Province is the most scenically dramatic destination on the Andaman coast of Thailand: a landscape of sheer-sided limestone karst formations rising 100–300 metres from the sea and from the mangrove estuaries, with the clearest water in southern Thailand and some of the finest rock climbing in Asia. The province covers a mainland town (Krabi Town, the administrative centre), a series of mainland beaches (Ao Nang, the main hub for day trips; Tubkaak, quieter), and two offshore island groups (the Ko Phi Phi islands, shared with Phuket; and the Ko Lanta group, the most developed island in Krabi).

Railay Beach — a limestone peninsula accessible only by longtail boat (15 min from Ao Nang; no road connection because the cliffs drop directly into the sea) — is the most celebrated single destination in Krabi and one of the most distinctive beach landscapes in Southeast Asia: a curved bay backed by 100-metre-high limestone walls, with rock climbers visible on the routes above the beach and longtail boats landing on the sand below. The Four Islands day trip, the Tiger Cave Temple hike and the mangrove kayaking tours complete a destination that rewards 5 days more than 2.

Top Sights in Krabi

Railay Beach

Railay (accessible only by longtail boat from Ao Nang: ฿100 per person each way, 15 minutes, boats leave when full) is the most photographed beach in Krabi and one of the most distinctive landscapes in Southeast Asia: a curved bay backed by 100-metre limestone karst walls, with West Railay Beach (the main swimming and resort beach), East Railay (the mangrove bay, where the boats land), and Phranang Cave Beach (the most beautiful beach at the tip of the peninsula; free to access on foot from Railay via a 15-minute cliff path). The Phranang Cave (Princess Cave; the stalactite cave with offerings left by local fishermen) is directly on Phranang Beach. Rock climbing on the limestone walls (hire a guide from any Railay beach shop; ฿800–1,200/half day) is the most active experience on the peninsula.

💡 Railay Beach (longtail boat from Ao Nang pier; 100 THB each way; 15 min; only accessible by boat) is the finest beach in Thailand: the limestone karst cliffs, the clear water, the white sand. Railay West has the best swimming; Railay East (mangrove side) has the best rock climbing (equipment hire from 200 THB/day from any Railay climbing shop).

Four Islands Day Trip

The Four Islands (Koh Poda, Koh Gai/Chicken Island, Koh Tub and Koh Mor; all within the Krabi Marine Protected Area; day trip by longtail from Ao Nang pier: ฿500–700 per person including the park entry and lunch; departs 9am) is the most-booked day trip in Krabi and justifiably so: the combination of the flat turquoise water, the limestone karst backdrop, the snorkelling over healthy coral and the sandbar between Koh Tub and Koh Mor (accessible at low tide; you can walk between the two islands) produces the most complete Andaman Sea experience accessible from the Ao Nang base.

💡 The Four Islands tour (from Ao Nang; from 700 THB; 8am–4pm; longtail or speedboat) visits Tub Island (the sandbar between two karsts), Chicken Island (snorkelling), Koh Mor (the most scenic karst island) and Phra Nang Cave Beach (a royal boat shrine in a limestone cave at the base of a karst). Book at any Ao Nang travel agent.

tiger cave temple krabi thailand hilltop steps view

Tiger Cave Temple — Wat Tham Suea

Wat Tham Suea (Tiger Cave Temple; 4km from Krabi Town; free temple entry; the 1,237-step staircase to the summit viewpoint requires fitness and 45–60 minutes of climbing; open 6am–6pm) is named for the cave temple at its base (where a tiger pawprint was found in the rock; now the main mediation hall, free to enter with appropriate dress). The summit of Khao Nor (278m above sea level) has the most panoramic view in Krabi province: the Andaman Sea, the Krabi River estuary, the surrounding limestone karst towers and, on clear days, the Ko Phi Phi islands on the horizon. Climb before 9am (the heat and crowds peak by 10am).

💡 Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea; free; 1,237 steps to the summit; 3km east of Krabi Town by songthaew) gives the finest 360° view of the Krabi River delta and the Andaman islands. The stair climb takes 45–60 min. Go at sunrise (6am) for the light and the fewest other visitors.

Ao Nang & Mangrove Kayaking

Ao Nang (the main beach resort in Krabi; a 3km curve of sand backed by a tourist strip of restaurants, dive shops and tour operators) is the practical base for all Krabi day trips and the departure point for the longtails to Railay. The beach itself is lively rather than beautiful — the mangrove estuary behind the town is more distinctive. Mangrove kayaking tours (2–3h; ฿400–600 per person; depart from the Ao Nang or Krabi Town piers) through the mangrove channels and sea caves of the Krabi River are one of the most atmospheric experiences in the province. The sea kayaking at low tide through the cave passages of Ko Hong (2h by speedboat east of Ao Nang) is the finest kayaking in the Andaman Sea.

💡 The Ao Nang mangrove kayak tour (from 800 THB; 3–4h; from any Ao Nang kayak hire shop) through the Tha Pom Klong Song Nam mangrove forest is the finest kayaking experience in Krabi. The limestone karst formations viewed from water level are more dramatic than from any road. Best in the morning before wind picks up.

Eating & Drinking

Krabi Town (15km inland from Ao Nang; songthaew ฿40 or Grab ฿100) has the finest local food in the province and is undervisited by tourists who stay entirely in Ao Nang. The Krabi Town Night Market (Maharaj Road; Tuesday, Friday and Saturday evenings; the best street food in Krabi province at ฿40–80/dish) has southern Thai Muslim food (biryani, roti with curry, massaman), fresh seafood and the Krabi specialty of grilled river prawns (the Krabi River produces the finest freshwater prawns in Thailand). For restaurants: May & Mark’s (Ao Nang; the most praised budget restaurant; everything under ฿150), Ruen Mai (Krabi Town; traditional southern Thai cuisine in a riverside garden setting) and the seafood restaurants along the Ao Nang beachfront.

Ao Nang has the full range of international beach resort food: pizza, pasta, burgers, Israeli breakfast, smoothie bowls. The Krabi Town night market food is generally better for the same or lower price. Alcohol is cheap throughout: Chang Beer (฿60), cocktails at beachfront bars (฿120–200). The sunset cocktail bars on Railay Beach West (particularly The Last Bar and Sunrise Tropical Resort) are the most atmospheric drinks in Krabi province.

Getting Around

Ao Nang is the practical base. Longtail to Railay (฿100 per person, 15 min from Ao Nang pier; boats leave when full, roughly every 20–30 min in peak season). Songthaews between Ao Nang and Krabi Town (฿40, 30 min; runs until around 6pm). Grab available in Ao Nang and Krabi Town but not always at night. Scooter rental (฿200/day) for exploring the mainland. Speedboats for the Phi Phi Islands and Ko Lanta: depart from Krabi Town pier or the Ao Nang pier (book through any tour shop or your hotel; compare prices as they vary significantly).

Best Time to Visit Krabi

Nov–Apr is the dry season: flat Andaman Sea, perfect for Railay and the Four Islands, reliable sun. May–Oct is monsoon season: rough seas make Railay longtails dangerous in heavy swell, the islands lose colour in poor weather. Same season as Phuket.

Travel Tips

🚴

Rock climbing: the most accessible in Asia

Krabi’s limestone karst walls (particularly the Railay and Tonsai Beach crags) are the most accessible sport climbing in Asia: routes from 5a to 8b, mostly on perfect limestone pockets and tufas, with a shoreline setting.

🛁

Railay: go for sunset, not midday

Railay Beach is most photogenic at sunset (the golden light on the limestone walls) and at dawn (empty beach, calm water).

Tiger Cave Temple: climb before 8am

The 1,237 steps to the summit of Wat Tham Suea take 45–60 minutes of sustained uphill climbing. Temperature and sun exposure at the top are intense from 9am onwards.

🏘

Stay on Ko Lanta for a different pace

Ko Lanta (1.5h south of Ao Nang by speedboat or 2.5h by car ferry; the most developed island in Krabi province) is the correct choice if Ao Nang feels too frenetic.

🍽

Eat in Krabi Town, not just Ao Nang

The songthaew from Ao Nang to Krabi Town (฿40, 30 min) accesses the finest food in the province.

Ko Phi Phi from Krabi: better than from Phuket

The speedboat to Phi Phi Islands from Ao Nang (1.5h; ฿600–900 return; fewer people than the Phuket boats) arrives slightly later but with a smaller group.

Useful Apps

Longtail boats to Railay depart when full from Ao Nang pier (no booking needed; ฿100/person each way; 15 min). Four Islands day trips: book through any Ao Nang tour shop (compare prices; they vary). Tiger Cave Temple: Grab from Ao Nang ฿100 each way. Ko Lanta ferry: departs from Krabi Town pier.
🚁

Grab

Fixed-price rides in Ao Nang and Krabi Town. Essential for the Tiger Cave Temple transfer (฿100 from Ao Nang; songthaews don’t go directly). Also for airport pickup (฿150–200 to Ao Nang).
