Stellenbosch was founded in 1679 by Simon van der Stel, making it South Africa’s second-oldest town of European origin, after Cape Town. Its oak-lined streets earned it the nickname Eikestad, the town of oaks.

Today it is a lively university town in the heart of the Cape Winelands, surrounded by mountains and more than 100 wine estates, about 50km east of Cape Town.
