Larnaca is the Cyprus most travellers meet first — the island’s main airport sits ten minutes from town — and plenty never feel the need to leave. It is the oldest continuously inhabited city on the island, heir to ancient Kition, where the philosopher Zeno was born and where Lazarus, the man Jesus raised from the dead, is said to have lived out his second life as bishop. His stone church still anchors the old quarter.

The city itself moves at beach pace. The Finikoudes promenade curves under its famous palms from the marina to the medieval fort, tavernas spill onto the sand, and just inland a salt lake fills each winter with flamingos beneath one of Islam’s holier shrines. Offshore lies the Zenobia, routinely ranked among the world’s top wreck dives. Larnaca is Cyprus concentrated: saints, seafront and easy living in one walkable seaside town.

Top Sights in Larnaca

Church of Saint Lazarus

Church of Saint Lazarus

Raised by Byzantine emperor Leo VI around 900 AD over the reputed second tomb of Lazarus, this is one of the finest churches in Cyprus — a forest of arches and gilded icons above a crypt you can still descend into. The saint’s relics were rediscovered here in 1972, and the church remains the beating heart of the old town around it.

💡 Modest dress applies; come during Orthodox vespers to hear the chanting — and don’t miss the crypt stairs to the right of the iconostasis.

Finikoudes & the Seafront

Finikoudes & the Seafront

Larnaca’s signature promenade — named for the palms planted in 1922 — runs from the marina to the Ottoman-era fort along a wide town beach where the swimming is easy and the cafe frontage never ends. The fort’s small museum and rooftop cannon platform close the walk with a view back down the bay.

💡 Swim mornings, stroll evenings — the promenade’s volta after sunset, gelato in hand, is Larnaca’s daily ritual.

Hala Sultan Tekke & the Salt Lake

Hala Sultan Tekke & the Salt Lake

On the salt lake’s shore, ringed by palms and utterly serene, stands Hala Sultan Tekke — the shrine of Umm Haram, an early follower of the Prophet, and one of the most venerated Islamic sites in the eastern Mediterranean. From roughly November to March the lake behind it turns pink with hundreds of flamingos wintering on the brine.

💡 Winter visits get the flamingos; any season gets the mosque’s palm-framed reflection — the lakeside trail from the airport road is an easy flat walk.

The Zenobia Wreck

The Zenobia Wreck

In 1980 a brand-new Swedish ferry rolled over and sank a mile off Larnaca with a hundred lorries still chained to her decks. The Zenobia now lies on her side in 42 metres of clear, warm water — consistently voted one of the world’s top ten wreck dives, with swim-throughs for technical divers and her upper flank reachable by novices.

💡 Local schools run daily boats — open-water divers can see plenty at 16–18m; glass-bottom boats show the outline to non-divers.

Eating & Drinking

Larnaca’s tavernas keep it traditional: fish meze in the old Turkish quarter of Skala, where grilled octopus and calamari arrive a few steps from the boats that caught them, and charcoal souvla on Sundays. The seafront cafes do the people-watching shift, but locals eat one street back — look for tavernas without photo menus around Saint Lazarus square. Try the local ttavas (lamb baked with cumin in clay), village halloumi, and loukoumades from the hole-in-the-wall shops. The Thursday-morning market by the old aqueduct is the place for figs, olives and mountain honey.

One Day in Larnaca

Morning
Saints & backstreets

Start at the Church of Saint Lazarus as it opens — icons, crypt and morning light — then wander the old Turkish quarter of Skala’s craft studios toward the fort.

Midday
Finikoudes proper

Swim off the town beach, then claim a taverna table one street back from the promenade — fish meze or ttavas done slowly, the Cypriot way.

Afternoon
The pink lake

Head out to Hala Sultan Tekke on the Salt Lake shore — flamingos in winter, mirror reflections all year — and walk a stretch of the lakeside trail as the light softens.

Evening
Marina lights

Back on Finikoudes for the evening volta: gelato past the marina masts, a rooftop drink overlooking the bay, and a late plate of loukoumades to close the day.

Travel Tips

You’re already here

Larnaca airport is 10 minutes from the centre — buses and Bolt make it the easiest arrival in the Mediterranean; consider spending your first or last night in town.

🦕

Flamingos are seasonal

The Salt Lake fills and turns pink roughly November to March; by high summer it’s a shimmering white salt flat — both are worth seeing.

🤿

Book the Zenobia early

Dive boats fill in summer — reserve ahead, and log a refresher dive first if you haven’t been under in a while.

🚶

Everything is walkable

Old town, fort, beach and marina sit within a 20-minute stroll — you won’t need wheels until you leave town.

Day-trip springboard

Nicosia is 45 minutes by motorway coach, Ayia Napa 40 — Larnaca makes a fine base for the whole east of the island.

🌙

August’s flood festival

Kataklysmos, the Festival of the Flood, brings concerts and water games to the seafront 50 days after Orthodox Easter — Larnaca celebrates it bigger than anywhere.
