Surfers Paradise Beach (the 4km beach fronting the tower district of Surfers Paradise; the most famous beach in Queensland) is the Gold Coast at its most essential: the continental-shelf positioning gives it consistent swell for surfing year-round (the waves are 1–2m in the dry season and can reach 3m during summer swells), the high-rise towers create a distinctive skyline behind the sand and the SkyPoint Observation Deck (Level 77 of the Q1 Tower; A$32; the tallest residential building in the Southern Hemisphere; 270° ocean and hinterland views) is the finest view of the beach from height in Queensland. The beach itself is patrolled from 7am; swim between the flags.
💡 The Surfers Paradise to Burleigh Heads coastal path (10km; free; flat; cycling or walking) passes 10 public beaches. Rent a bike from Gold Coast Bicycle Hire (A$30/half-day) for the full coastal circuit. Always swim between the flags — patrolled 8am–5pm by Surf Life Saving Queensland.
The Gold Coast is home to four major theme parks within 20km of each other, making it the most concentrated theme park destination in the Southern Hemisphere: Dreamworld (Coomera; the largest theme park; the Big 8 Thrill Rides; DreamWorks Animation rides; A$109/day), Sea World (Main Beach; marine animal presentations; rollercoasters; the new Sea World Resort; A$105/day), Warner Bros. Movie World (Oxenford; DC Comics characters; the DC Rivals HyperCoaster — the tallest and fastest coaster in Australia; A$109/day) and Wet’n’Wild Gold Coast (water park; A$79/day). A 3-Park Super Pass (A$199) covering access to any three parks is the best value option.

Both are 30 min north of Surfers Paradise on the Pacific Highway (bus or taxi; A$15). Movie World for DC Comics rides; Dreamworld for thrill-seekers and the Tiger Island wildlife experience.
Lamington National Park (1.5h west by car; 20,000 hectares of Gondwana rainforest in the McPherson Ranges; the O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat is the most famous guesthouse in Queensland — a family property since 1915, surrounded by rainforest with hand-feeding wild birds from the deck) is the finest natural scenery within reach of the Gold Coast. The Tree Top Walk (the suspension bridges through the rainforest canopy; free with O’Reilly’s entry; the view from the highest bridge at 15m above the canopy floor is extraordinary), the Box Forest Circuit (the waterfall circuit; 9km; 4h) and the Springbrook National Park Natural Arch (the waterfall and cave with the colony of glow-worms visible after dark; 1h from the Gold Coast) are the three best hinterland experiences.
💡 Lamington National Park (free; National Park entry; 1h 30min southwest by car) has 160km of walking tracks and the densest rainforest birdlife in Queensland. O’Reilly’s tree canopy walk (A$35; book at oreillys.com.au) is the finest elevated rainforest walkway experience in South-East Queensland.
Burleigh Heads (15km south of Surfers Paradise; G:link light rail to Broadbeach then bus; or Uber) is the most appealing neighbourhood on the Gold Coast for visitors who want quality over spectacle: the Burleigh Heads National Park (the walking track from the beach through the headland rainforest to the lookout above the break; 30 min return; the finest headland view on the Gold Coast), the beach itself (the right-hand point break at Burleigh; one of the finest surf waves in Australia; the Quiksilver and Billabong Pro surfing competitions are held here), and the James Street food strip (the finest restaurant and natural wine bar concentration on the Gold Coast). Palm Beach (5km further south) and Coolangatta (on the NSW border; 20km south) are each progressively quieter and more local in character.
💡 Burleigh Heads National Park (free; Goodwin Terrace; 20 min south of Surfers by G:link tram; A$3.20) has the finest short walk on the Gold Coast: 2.5km coastal rainforest circuit with headland views over the surf break. Burleigh Heads Main Beach (free; patrolled) is the preferred beach for locals over Surfers.
The Gold Coast food scene splits into two distinct worlds: the tourist-facing restaurants and buffets of the Surfers Paradise strip (international chains, surf-and-turf restaurants, the seafood buffets at the casino hotels) and the genuinely excellent food culture of Burleigh Heads and Broadbeach. Burleigh Heads James Street is the correct eating address: Rick Shores (the finest Asian-Australian restaurant on the Gold Coast; the views over the break from the deck; book ahead), Paddock Bakery (the most famous bakery in Queensland; the croissants and the chocolate bread), Canteen Kitchen (the farm-to-table lunch; the best burger in Burleigh), and the Burleigh Brewing Co. (the home of the XXXX rival; the Bighead No Carb Beer and the rare stout; tours available on weekends).
Broadbeach (3km south of Surfers Paradise; the G:link light rail stop) is the more grown-up entertainment precinct: the Kurrawa Beach surf club (the finest sunset drinks terrace in the Broadbeach area), the Star Gold Coast casino complex (the restaurants, the poolside bars) and the Oracle Boulevard (the most concentrated restaurant street in Broadbeach).
The G:link light rail (Gold Coast Light Rail; Go Card A$3.60–5/ride; runs every 7.5 min in peak hour from Helensvale to Broadbeach South; 36 stops in 20km) is the spine of the Gold Coast tourist network: it connects all the major accommodation zones from Surfers Paradise north to Helensvale (for Dreamworld and Warner Bros. Movie World connections by bus) and south to Broadbeach. Uber is the most practical transport for the theme parks, Burleigh Heads and the hinterland. The Gold Coast Beach Bus (TransLink 777; A$6/day; connects the beaches from Coolangatta to Surfers Paradise) is the cheapest way to beach-hop the surf coast.
Burleigh Heads (15 min south of Surfers) has walkable streets of genuinely good restaurants and a proper beach-town feel. Surfers Paradise is hotels, clubs, and tourist shops.
Schoolies Week brings 40,000 school-leavers to Surfers Paradise in mid-November. Hotel prices spike, the beach precinct becomes a managed event zone, and noise is relentless.
Village Roadshow’s 5-park Ultimate Pass (AU$199 online; not available at the gate) covers Dreamworld, Warner Bros., Sea World, Wet’n’Wild, and Paradise Country.
Natural Arch (Springbrook NP; 1 hour inland; free) has a cave arch glow-worm colony most visible after 8pm. No artificial light needed — the worms provide their own illumination.
Byron Bay is 1 hour south into NSW. The lighthouse walk (continental Australia’s most easterly point), town centre, and Pass Beach justify a full day trip from the Gold Coast.
The SkyPoint external climb (AU$75; Q1 Building) is most dramatic at twilight when the Gold Coast lights switch on. Book the 6:30pm summer slot for the finest timing.
Apr–Oct (the dry season) is best: 18–26°C, low humidity, consistent surf, no jellyfish (stingers). Dec–Feb is warm (26–32°C) and the beach season but humid with stingers. Avoid mid-November (Schoolies Week).
Three days: Surfers Paradise and Burleigh Heads, a full theme park day, and the hinterland.

Book a Warner Bros. Movie World + Wet’n’Wild combo (or Dreamworld + Sea World; 3-Park Super Pass A$199 for 3 days). Movie World: DC Rivals HyperCoaster (Australia’s tallest, fastest), the Green Lantern Coaster, the Joker Funhouse. Sea World: the Sea World Monorail (overview of the park), the rollercoasters, the marine presentations. Buy food within the parks (allow A$20–30 for lunch + snacks). Return to Surfers by 6pm.
💡 Book Movie World or Dreamworld online the day before (15–20% off). Bus 715 or 720 from Surfers (45 min; A$6.20) or taxi (A$35). Full day for the major rides — arrive at opening time for the shortest queues.
Rent a car. Option A: Lamington National Park (O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat; 1.5h; the Treetop Walk, the hand-feeding wild birds, the Box Forest Circuit waterfall walk). Option B: Natural Arch, Springbrook NP (45 min; the waterfall under the rock arch; glow-worms visible after dark; arrive at 5pm, hike in at dusk). Either route: drive back through the scenic Canungra township (lunch stop; the Canungra Hotel pub meal). Return to Gold Coast by 5pm.

The Gold Coast is mid-range: cheaper than Sydney, slightly pricier than Brisbane. Theme parks are the main one-off cost. Accommodation ranges from budget hostels to 5-star beachfront. Per person per day.
The G:link light rail (A$3.60–5/ride) connects all main areas. The beach itself is free. A surf lesson (A$65) is the best single-activity value on the Gold Coast.
The 3-Park Super Pass (A$199 for 3 different parks over multiple days) is the best theme park value. Warner Bros. Movie World + Wet’n’Wild + Sea World in 3 days covers the full range.
Palazzo Versace (Main Beach; the only Versace-branded hotel in the world; the finest address on the Gold Coast) has a waterway-facing location with the most extravagant lobby in Queensland.
G:link light rail, Gold Coast buses and train connections to Brisbane. The Beach Bus 777 (runs between Coolangatta and Surfers Paradise along the beach road; A$6/day unlimited) is the cheapest beach-hopping option.
