Australian wine is at its most accessible in Sydney: the Clare Valley riesling, the Hunter Valley semillon, the Barossa shiraz and the Margaret River cabernet sauvignon are all well-represented in the bottle shop and wine bar culture. The Opal Card (available at any station or 7-Eleven; A$0 card; load credit onto it) covers all Sydney Trains, Sydney Buses, Sydney Ferries and the Inner West Light Rail. The daily cap is A$17 and the weekly cap is A$50 — so heavy use becomes free after the cap is reached. Trains: the City Circle connects all CBD stations. Ferries: the Manly Ferry (Wharf 3, Circular Quay; A$9.20 each way; 30 min; the most scenic commute in the world) and the Parramatta Ferry are the most useful tourist routes. Uber is available and reasonably priced (A$15–30 for most inner-city journeys). Airport train: A$18.90 from any station to the CBD.
Sep–Nov (spring) and Mar–May (autumn) offer the best balance of warmth, manageable crowds and lower hotel rates. Dec–Feb (summer) is the beach season — Bondi is at its most photogenic but also most crowded. Jun–Aug is mild and quiet; the Blue Mountains have winter appeal.
Sydney is one of the most expensive cities in the Asia-Pacific region: accommodation and dining costs are comparable to London or New York. The Opal Card transport system is excellent value. Per person per day.
The Opal Card daily cap (A$17 after 8 journeys) makes heavy public transport use very cheap. The Bondi to Coogee coastal walk, the Royal Botanic Garden and the Mrs Macquaries Point viewpoint are free.

The 6km coastal clifftop walk from Bondi to Coogee takes 2 hours. Start by 8am — ocean pools and sea views with no crowds. Hot and fully exposed to sun by 10am.
Sydney Fish Market (Bank Street, Pyrmont; opens 7am) has the freshest oysters and fish before 9am. After 9am the counter queues build quickly on weekends and holidays.
The BridgeClimb (from AU$218; 3.5 hours; 134m above harbour) provides a jumpsuit. Wear it — the SE wind at the summit feels 15°C colder than at ground level.
Sydney’s UV index reaches 12+ (extreme) in summer. Apply SPF50+ every 2 hours outdoors. The Australian sun causes sunburn in under 20 minutes at midday.
The annual Vivid light festival (late May to mid-June; free) projects onto the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, and 15 other city landmarks. Best Tuesday–Thursday nights.
