Sunrise on the Salar requires an earlier departure (5am; book a sunrise tour through your guesthouse or any Uyuni agency — all agencies offer this; USD 15–25 additional). The Incahuasi Island (Isla Incahuasi; the only island on the Salar; covered in 1,000-year-old giant cacti; BOB 30 entry; the finest Salar panorama viewpoint) is the essential stop on any Salar tour.
The Salar mirror effect (the thin layer of water — 5–20cm deep — that floods the Salar surface during the wet season; January–March; the water creates a perfect mirror reflection of the sky; the horizon disappears; the sky appears to continue below the feet; the single most extraordinary visual spectacle available in South America) produces the most otherworldly photographs possible without digital manipulation. The reflection is most perfect at dawn and dusk when the wind is calm.
💡 The mirror effect is available January–March. Dry season (May–November) provides the salt hexagon pattern but not the reflection. Many travellers specifically time their Bolivia trip for January–February to experience the mirror effect. The standard perspective photographs (a person appearing to stand in the sky; objects appearing to float above their reflection; optical illusion shots) are staged by every tour guide and are straightforward to recreate — the physics of the mirror surface make the effect genuinely extraordinary rather than gimmicky.
The 3-day Uyuni to San Pedro de Atacama overland jeep tour (the standard circuit; USD 100–180 from any Uyuni agency; passing the Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve at 5,000m; the Laguna Colorada — the red flamingo lake; the Geysers Sol de Mañana at 5,000m erupting at dawn; the Salvador Dalí Desert landscape; and the Chilean border crossing) is one of the finest overland journeys in South America. The route covers 3 of Bolivia’s most extraordinary high-altitude landscapes in a single journey.
💡 Book the 3-day tour with a reputable Uyuni agency at least 1 day ahead (all agencies operate the same route; price differences reflect vehicle quality and guide quality; the cheapest tours (<USD 100) often have poor vehicles and no English guide; USD 140–180 with an English-speaking guide and reliable Toyota Land Cruiser is worth the premium). The Geysers Sol de Mañana (5,000m; 6am; the most dramatic geothermal landscape in South America after El Tatio) require arriving at the geyser field before 9am while they are most active.
The Uyuni Train Cemetery (Cementerio de Trenes; 3km from Uyuni town; free; the rusting hulks of 19th-century steam locomotives and carriages abandoned when the Bolivian silver and tin mining industry collapsed in the early 20th century; the locomotives are accessible to climb; the graffiti-covered rusting metal against the altiplano sky is an extraordinary industrial-archaeological landscape) is a free and accessible 1-hour exploration that provides the historical context for Uyuni’s existence as a railway junction and mineral export hub.
💡 The Train Cemetery is best at sunset (the rusting metal turns orange; the long shadows of the locomotives; the altiplano landscape in the evening light) and is a standard last stop on any Salar day tour. Climb the largest locomotive for the finest panorama (the Uyuni town visible 3km away; the flat altiplano extending to distant mountains in every direction). Bring a warm layer — the altiplano at 3,650m drops rapidly after 4pm.
Uyuni town has a modest food scene of tourist-oriented restaurants clustered around the central plaza. Minuteman Pizza (the most popular traveller restaurant in Uyuni; calzones, pasta, and set meals; USD 8–15; the gathering point for travellers pre-tour) and the Plaza restaurant cluster (Bolivian set meals; almuerzo del día BOB 25–35; local soup, main, and juice) are the two practical options. The 3-day Atacama tour includes all meals at the basic refugio hostels along the route — simple rice, quinoa soup, and llama or chicken; functional and filling. Bring snacks for the Salar days (the tour agencies provide lunch on the salar; but extra energy snacks are valuable at 5,000m).
The Salar wet season mirror (January–March; 3–5cm water depth; the salt flat becomes a perfect 360-degree sky reflection; the finest photographic effect) is completely different from the white dry season. Both are worth experiencing.
The 3-day Atacama circuit (departs Uyuni daily at 11am; Laguna Colorada day 2; Chile border day 3; USD 70–120 all-inclusive; book in Uyuni the day before) is the finest multi-day route in Bolivia.
The Salar altiplano at night on the 3-day tour (4,500–5,000m; temperatures reach −15°C; the refugio accommodation is basic) requires genuine winter camping preparation. Sleeping bag and thermal layers are essential.
La Paz to Uyuni: overnight semi-cama bus (USD 20–30; multiple agencies from La Paz bus terminal; departs 7–8pm; arrives Uyuni 5–6am; a rough but scenic Andean route).
The Uyuni Salar UV index is approximately 20% higher than at sea level due to altitude, plus the white salt reflects UV upward. SPF 50+ sunscreen, UV sunglasses, and a hat are non-negotiable at any time of year.
The 3-day circuit has no electricity at the basic refugios. Charge all devices fully before departing Uyuni, bring a 20,000mAh power bank, and set cameras to battery-conservation mode for the cold nights.
