The CTrain LRT (the Calgary light rail; free within the downtown fare zone between City Hall and 10th Street SW; C$3.75 outside the free zone; the Red Line for the airport and the Stampede grounds; the Blue Line for the northwest) is the core transit. A rental car (C$50–80/day) is essential for Banff, Kananaskis and the Rockies. Uber is available and practical throughout the city (C$10–25 for most journeys). The +15 Skywalk (the enclosed elevated pedestrian network connecting all downtown buildings; free; follow the +15 signs; heated; the correct way to navigate downtown in winter) is the most useful urban infrastructure for visitors staying downtown.
Jul (Stampede; book months ahead; prices triple) and Jun–Sep for Rocky Mountain access in full summer. May and Sep–Oct are the best-value shoulder seasons for Banff. Dec–Mar is cold (−15°C) but Chinook winds occasionally bring mild breaks and skiing at Banff/Lake Louise is world-class.
Calgary has no provincial sales tax (5% GST only on purchases). Stampede week triples accommodation prices; book months ahead. The Rockies add C$100–200/day in park fees, activities and fuel. Per person per day.
No PST in Alberta makes Calgary and Banff a significant saving over Ontario or BC for purchases.

Chinook winds can raise Calgary’s temperature 20°C in hours. January can bring a warm 15°C afternoon followed by -20°C the next morning. Pack layers.
Lake Louise sunrise turns the lake turquoise and the Victoria Glacier pink. The Fairview Lookout trail (1 hour return) gives the best elevated angle.
